Despite disappointing Pixel 4, 2019 was Google’s best year for phone sales yet

Google Pixelbook Go Review closed with Pixel 4

  • A third-party analyst firm says Google Pixel sales hit 7.2 million in 2019.
  • This would make it the best year yet for the Pixel line, although that number pales in comparison to the top-five brands.
  • It’s very likely sales of the Google Pixel 3a make up the bulk of that 7.2 million figure.

A few weeks ago, news broke that Google was allegedly disappointed with the Google Pixel 4, even prior to that device’s launch. However disappointing it may have been, it doesn’t appear to have stopped Google Pixel sales from hitting a record high in 2019.

According to third-party analyst firm International Data Corporation (IDC), Google Pixel sales hit 7.2 million units in 2019. Although the numbers don’t get broken down by device, it’s likely most of those sales come from the two 2019 phones launched — the Google Pixel 3a and Google Pixel 4. At least some of the shipments are probably made up of Google Pixel 3 sales, too.

However, it’s estimated that the Google Pixel 4 only sold around 2 million units over its first six months, which would mean a portion of that number wouldn’t count towards the 2019 total. Therefore, it’s basically a guarantee that the bulk of the Google Pixel sales in 2019 came from the Pixel 3a line.

Google Pixel sales likely dominated by the Pixel 3a

The budget-oriented Pixel 3a line was a big hit critically, so it likely being the best-selling phone in the line would make a lot of sense. The series is also easily accessible from many major carriers around the world and is available in India, the world’s second-largest smartphone market. The Pixel 4 is not available in India, which likely didn’t help its sales.

While 7.2 million Google Pixel sales might be great for Google when compared to its previous years, it should be noted that it pales in comparison to the top-five manufacturers. Huawei, the second-largest smartphone OEM in the world, shipped 230 million phones in 2019, to give you an idea of Google’s market share.

However, the apparent success of the Pixel 3a gives more credence to the rumor that Google’s Pixel 5 phone will be a more mid-range affair with a weaker processor but a cheaper entry price. This news also makes us even more excited than we already are for the Google Pixel 4a, which still does not have a confirmed release date.

Samsung reveals Galaxy Fold sales numbers, and they’re pretty respectable

Samsung Galaxy Fold Review shimmery back

Today, Samsung Electronic’s President Young Sohn revealed on stage for the first time some Samsung Galaxy Fold sales figures. The announcement came during the TechCrunch Disrupt Berlin event (via TechCrunch).

According to Young Sohn, Samsung has sold at least 1 million Galaxy Fold devices globally.

“And I think that the point is, we’re selling [a] million of these products,” Sohn said on stage. “There’s a million people that want to use this product at $ 2,000.”

Apparently, Sohn felt comfortable dishing the Samsung Galaxy Fold sales numbers to help emphasize that there is, in fact, a market for incredibly expensive smartphones. The Galaxy Fold starts at $ 1,980 for the 4G LTE version here in the United States, and the 5G variant — which isn’t available in the US — starts at 2.398 million Korean won (~$ 2,038.60).

We know for a fact that the phone’s high price isn’t scaring away Canadian buyers. An official Samsung partner revealed to Android Authority today that Canada is almost completely sold out of Galaxy Fold devices, and the phone only hit store shelves on December 6. In Canada, the Fold starts at CA$ 2,600 (~$ 1,972.67).

While these Samsung Galaxy Fold sales numbers seem to be pretty strong, they obviously are nothing when compared to Samsung’s primary flagship lines, such as the Samsung Galaxy S10 family. Halfway through 2019, Samsung had already moved 16 million devices in the S10 family, which includes the Galaxy S10, S10 Plus, S10e, and S10 5G.

Still, these Samsung Galaxy Fold sales numbers do tell an interesting story: even with an incredibly high price tag and a disastrous launch, Samsung can still sell a million units of an innovative smartphone.

Sony reportedly looking into new ventures, partnerships and sales for their mobile division

SONY Brand Shot logo CES 2014-3

Sony’s mobile division has been suffering over the past few years, and the company may be looking into a new venture to turn their business around. In a recent report, Sony is said to be exploring other options including new business partnerships and even a sale when it comes to the company’s mobile division. The report from Reuters doesn’t name any specific deals or avenues Sony is looking towards, but we do know that the electronics giant is looking for new ventures to save their dying mobile branch. Sony CEO, Kazuo Hirai, explains that “the mobile and TV businesses both require a drastic overhaul.” He goes on to say, “Without drastic reforms such as joint ventures or alliances, they will both be in the red three years from now.”

Sony has been largely focusing on high-end mobile phones and cost cutting over the past few years, and it’s apparent that these attempts to save money aren’t warranting any results. At CES 2015, Hirai elaborated on the company’s status to a group of reporters:

Electronics in general, along with entertainment and finance, will continue to be an important business. But within that there are some operations that will need to be run with caution – and that might be TV or mobile, for example.

All of these alternate business ventures haven’t spawned completely out of the blue, though. In late 2012, Sony moved its headquarters to Japan and vowed to cut 1,000 jobs by the year 2014. The effort didn’t produce many results because Sony later reported a $ 1.7 billion loss due to poor smartphone sales in late 2014. If that didn’t make a big difference, Sony has also recently planned to slim their smartphone line down to hopefully return some sort of profit.

Sony looking into other business opportunities seems to be a last-ditch effort on Hirai’s part to turn the company’s mobile division around. For now, only time will tell what the company will do to increase profits.
