It’s official: the iPhone 12 is coming at Apple’s October 13 event

  • Apple has announced a “Hi, Speed” event for October 13 at 1PM Eastern.
  • It’s expected to introduce the iPhone 12.
  • An ARM-based Mac, new audio devices and other products might also appear.

You won’t have to wait long to hear about the iPhone 12. Apple has announced (via John Paczkowski) a long-rumored October 13 event where it’s expected to unveil the iPhone 12, an ARM-based Mac laptop, and possibly more. It’s expected to be a virtual, pre-recorded event and will start at 1PM Eastern.

The invitation for the “Hi, Speed” event doesn’t reveal much by itself, but it’s evident performance will play a key role. The iPhone 12 should live up to that billing if rumors are accurate between 5G support and a fast A14 Bionic chip, but it could also be a reference to Apple’s expectations that ARM-based Macs will outperform their Windows counterparts.

The iPhone 12 at Apple’s event is also rumored to represent the first significant design change since the iPhone X, with a flatter design (reminiscent of the iPhone 4 and iPad Air) and possibly a narrower notch for the front sensors. You’d see significant size changes as well, with an iPhone 12 “mini” at 5.4 inches, two 6.1-inch models (the standard iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro), and a larger 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max. OLED screens might be common across the range, and you might also see updated cameras and storage capacities.

What any Mac refresh would entail isn’t as clear. While it’s expected to use a variant of the A14 (possibly an A14X), rumors have circulated of the first ARM-based Mac laptop being either a 13-inch MacBook Pro or a revival of the old 12-inch MacBook. There has also been talk of a redesigned entry-level iMac that might share design elements with newer iPads or the Pro Display XDR.

These might not be the only products at Apple’s October 13 event. It’s claimed to be readying its first Apple-branded over-ear headphones, possibly called the AirPods Studio, and might introduce a smaller, more affordable HomePod speaker. Given that Apple appears to be pulling third-party audio products from its stores, those might be real possibilities. A Tile-like item tracker might also show, and you might get a release date for macOS Big Sur.

This promises to be a crucial event for Apple. The iPhone 12 line may be key to keeping Apple profitable in the midst of a grim smartphone market, not to mention fending off competition from Samsung, Google, and others. And if an ARM-based Mac laptop or desktop appears, Apple may have to make a good first impression if it’s going to convince computer buyers that they should leave x86 behind.

Redmi K30 Racing Edition goes official as first phone with Snapdragon 768G

Xiaomi has launched a new phone in the Redmi K30 series. Called the Redmi K30 5G Racing Edition (although machine translation also calls it the Extreme or Speed Edition), it’s the first phone to feature Qualcomm’s upgraded Snapdragon 768G chipset.

The new 5G-enabled processor brings a slight performance increase over the existing Snapdragon 765 and 765G. It boosts the CPU clock speed from 2.4GHz to 2.8GHz. It also ups the performance of the Adreno 620 GPU by about 15%.

Elsewhere, the new Snapdragon 768G includes an integrated 5G modem, making the Redmi K30 Racing Edition compatible with dual mode SA/NSA 5G. The phone also gets 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

Besides the upgraded silicon, the Redmi K30 5G Racing Edition gets the same 120Hz refresh rate as its predecessor. The display size is also the same at 6.67-inches. It has an FHD+ resolution (1080 x 2400 pixels) and a 20:9 aspect ratio.

What else to know about Redmi K30 variant?

There’s a vertically aligned quad camera setup at the back consisting of a 64MP Sony IMX686 primary camera, an 8MP ultra-wide camera, a 5MP macro camera, and a 2MP depth-of-field sensor. As you can see, the camera setup is pretty much the same as the Redmi K30 5G.

On the front of the Redmi K30 Racing Edition is a 20MP selfie shooter assisted by a 2MP depth sensor, both housed within punch holes on the right corner of the screen.

In terms of connectivity, the phone features a 3.5mm headphone jack as well as a USB-C port. In addition to 5G connectivity mentioned before, the phone also supports dual SIM compatibility, Bluetooth, NFC, an IR blaster, and GPS/ A-GPS.

The volume buttons rest on the right edge of the phone and the fingerprint sensor is integrated with the power button.

The entire package is powered by a 4,500mAh battery and there’s 30W fast charging onboard. There’s no wireless charging on the phone.

Redmi K30 Racing Edition: Price and availability

The new Snapdragon 768G phone has only launched in China for now. It is priced at 1,999 Chinese Yuan (~$ 282).

Overall, the new Redmi K30 Racing Edition isn’t at all different from the Redmi K30 5G. The only exception is its new Qualcomm chip, which should improve the overall performance of the phone and assist with a better gaming experience given its GPU boost.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip gets its first official teaser ad during the Oscars

The existence of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip has been leaked via video and renders well before Tuesday’s big Samsung Unpacked press event. However, the company has now decided to run an official teaser TV ad for the upcoming foldable phone two days before that event. The commercial was first shown during ABC’s telecast of the Oscars.

While the ad doesn’t actually show the name of this phone, it’s clear the device is the clamshell-based Galaxy Z Flip. As reposted on the It’s me CL YouTube channel, the commercial shows the smartphone opening up to its full-screen length. It then shows how the camera app can be used to place the subject on the top screen, while the bottom screen can be placed flat on a surface to take a photo.

The ad also shows the small secondary screen when the Galaxy Z Flip is closed that can be used for phone notifications. One interesting thing about the commercial is that there’s a small disclaimer on the bottom that says people may “notice a crease at the center of the main screen”, which Samsung says is a “natural characteristic of the screen”. It’s obvious that Samsung is trying to head off complaints about visible creases on the Galaxy Z Flip.

The ad concludes with the February 11 date for the Samsung Unpacked event, where we will presumably get a full and official reveal of Samsung’s new foldable. You can check out what has been unofficially leaked about this foldable phone at our Galaxy Z Flip page. Stay tuned as we will have full coverage of the Samsung Unpacked press event on Tuesday.

Reddit’s official Android app just began its closed beta test

Reddit native android app beta

In the internet equivalent of a State of the Union address, site founder Steve “spez” Huffman revealed that the closed beta for the official Reddit Android app will be starting today. Applications for the beta opened in December, but we haven’t heard much news about it since then. Only a few thousand candidates were selected to take part in the test, but we look forward to seeing what comes of this app. An iOS beta is also slated to begin soon.

Historically, users have had to rely on third party applications like Reddit is Fun, Baconreader, and Slide. Although access through a mobile browser is possible, the nature of Reddit’s content and organization make a mobile-optimized app a much more convenient option. Since the only options to date have been third party, there have always been hiccups and difficulties when Reddit makes any changes. Having an official Reddit app may make any transitions much smoother.

However, the opposite could also wind up being true. Many Twitter users, for instance, eschew the official app in favor of more powerful third party creations. Depending on the kind of functionality Reddit’s official app will have, it could become the go-to choice like Facebook’s app, or it might just become one of the competition.

There’s no details yet on what this official app will look like, so we’ll have to wait around to see what functions and aesthetics it will offer. If you’re a part of the beta squad, and there’s no agreement preventing you from disclosing your experience, feel free to let us know what it’s like in the comments! In the meantime, what app do you use to browse Reddit? Think you’ll switch to the official one when it comes out?

Nexus 9 gets official CyanogenMod 12 nightlies

Nexus 9-19

Google’s latest tablet, the HTC built Nexus 9, is proving to be a great device for many users. It comes with Google’s vanilla flavor of Android, now up to Android 5.0.2 Lollipop, but there is now another option out there for you. Cyanogen Inc. has released CyanogenMod 12 nightlies for the Nexus 9.

The official support for the Nexus 9 is a welcome addition to the available custom ROMs out there. Of course, as we’ve discussed a few times in the last couple weeks, CyanogenMod 12 nightlies are the alternative ROM maker’s beta stream, a stable release of CM 12 is still not available. You should expect to see a few hiccups here and there, but we understand things are running fairly well at this point.

CM 12 is based on Android Lollipop as well, meaning that flashing to this new OS should not be a drastic change from your current stock Android 5.0.2 Lollipop experience. Do remember that you’ll need an unlocked bootloader and a custom recovery to continue. Luckily, Nexus devices are well supported for this sort of stuff, if something goes wrong, flashing back to stock is rarely a difficult task.

CyanogenMod Void Warranty

Cyanogen has been shaking things up lately, they have all but split ways with OnePlus, the manufacturer of the self proclaimed flagship killer OnePlus One handset. Then they go ahead and throw their gloves to the ice to take on Google themselves, seeking to launch a Google apps free Android experience. Microsoft is said to be getting into this mess as well, throwing a bit of cash at Cyanogen.

With all of these changes, we almost wondered if pushing CM 12 to the Nexus 9 is a move to attack Google. But then we remember, Cyanogen has been rocking their OS on most high end devices around the globe already, no need for theatrics, CM 12 on the Nexus 9 is just business as usual.

Head on over to the CyanogenMod 12 nightlies page to grab your copy of the new system image, and get ready for your new daily updates.

Nexus 9 owners, will you be flashing CM 12 nighlties on your tablet?
