Who wants a phone with 5G, 90Hz display, and a big battery for $215? (Update)

Update, August 4, 2020 (4AM ET): According to XDA-Developers citing a Realme spokesperson, the V series will also go on sale in most of Realme’s international markets, including Europe, at some point this year. This includes the Realme V5.

While there’s no pricing info for the phone just yet, a direct conversion from its Chinese price suggests a tag of around €180 in Europe. However, European pricing for phones is generally higher than Chinese prices.

Original article, August 3, 2020 (6:40 AM ET): The Realme V5 5G is now official in China, and with its introduction drops the price of 5G access to below the $ 250 mark.

The affordable phone adds bulk to the company’s previous device launches in 2020, like the X50 Pro and the X3 SuperZoom. But unlike this duo, the Realme V5 isn’t meant to be a flagship killer, unless you’re only buying flagships for 5G connectivity.

Aesthetically, it’s nothing we haven’t seen before this year. You’re looking at a punch-hole selfie camera with a shimmering rear plate and a large rectangular camera array in its top-left corner. The silver version also gets that now customary ‘Realme’ print at the rear of the device, although the branding is comically huge here.

Other on-trend features also make the list. The Realme V5 5G sports a 6.5-inch IPS display with 2,400 x 1,080 resolution and a 90Hz refresh rate. Buyers also get a quad-camera array at the rear, headlined by a 48MP primary camera. Joining it is an 8MP ultrawide, a 2MP macro snapper, and a 2MP depth sensor. A 16MP sensor is used for the selfie camera.

Under the Realme V5’s skin lies the Mediatek Dimensity 720 chipset which gives the phone sub-6GHz 5G support and eight CPU cores to play around with. The chip isn’t as powerful as the Dimensity 820, but does allow Realme to add 5G support at a lower cost. A 5,000mAh battery keeps the lights on and can be topped up using Realme’s 30W SuperDart charging.

The Realme V5 will be offered with either 6GB or 8GB RAM, but 128GB of UFS 2.1 storage is the only storage option. There’s also a microSD card slot to boost that figure though.

Other creature comforts include a 3.5mm headphone jack, support for Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.0, and dual SIM slots. The device runs on Android 10 with Realme UI on top.

The Realme V5 5G will go on sale in China on August 7 starting at 1,499 yuan (~$ 215) for the 6GB RAM model. The 8GB RAM option is 1,899 yuan (~$ 270). That’s an awful lot more to pay for just a bit more RAM.

As for the colorways, buyers get a choice of silver, green, and blue.

No pricing or availability info beyond China has been announced just yet, but the V5 could kick off a fierce affordable 5G phone battle if it’s ever launched internationally.

OnePlus 8/ 8 Pro getting new software updates, but no mention of a display fix


Update, May 5, 2020 (2:20AM ET): OnePlus is reportedly rolling out another update for the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro. The new Oxygen OS 10.5.6.IN11AA for the OnePlus 8 Pro and 10.5.5.IN21AA for the OnePlus 8 brings some system and camera improvements.

The changelog doesn’t clearly verify if it fixes the ongoing display problems on the phones, especially the OnePlus 8 Pro. The previous update (read original article below) fixed the green tint issue on the OnePlus 8 Pro for some users, but the black crush issue wasn’t resolved. The latter was initially thought to be a hardware problem, although OnePlus has since claimed that it’s indeed a software problem too.

The latest software update mentions that it fixes known issues, but the language is very generic and doesn’t really point to a display fix. You can see the changelog for the update below.

Meanwhile, some users who have received the new update are not too happy with it. A user on Reddit says that the update fixes the green tint issue on the OnePlus 8 Pro when DC Dimming is switched on, but it reappears when DC Dimming is switched off. Another user on OnePlus forums reports that the camera on the OnePlus 8 Pro has become worse since the update and has resulted in images showing random flares. The experience, however, might not be the same for all users.

The new OnePlus 8/8 Pro updates are reportedly rolling out in parts of US and Europe right now. An official announcement from OnePlus and wider availability can be expected soon.

The OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro launched on April 14, 2020. Both launched with the latest version of Android out-of-the-box: Android 10. We expect both devices to receive at least two major Android updates in the future — Android 11 in 2020 and Android 12 in 2021.

Days after the phones launched, OnePlus rolled out the Oxygen OS 10.5.4 update for the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro. It was a minor update, but brought Google’s Live Caption feature to the phones. It also enhanced support for the OnePlus Bullets Wireless Z earbuds, optimized the cameras and fingerprint sensor, improved system stability and more.

However, a bunch of users started reporting the appearance of a green tint on the displays of their phones. Some also reported a black crush issue which made dark areas of the screen lose detail.

OnePlus then rolled out Oxygen OS 10.5.5 for both the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro. The update sort of fixed the green tint problem for some, but the black crush issue remained.

The changelog was also tight-lipped about the display problems. The only indication on it related to the display was a pointer noting “optimized the display effects,” which doesn’t clearly mean the green tint or black crush issue.

OnePlus 8 series to challenge the Galaxy S20 with its own 120Hz Fluid Display

OnePlus has developed a new QHD+ OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate that will debut with the OnePlus 8 series. The company revealed specifications and features for the new display at its screen technology event held in Shenzhen, China earlier today.

With a 120Hz refresh rate, the content on the display is refreshed 120 times per second. This makes for smoother playback as well as an overall fluid OS navigation experience. We’ve previously seen 120Hz screens on the likes of the Asus ROG Phone 2 and Razer Phone 2.

According to information trickling in on Twitter and Chinese social media website Weibo, the display will feature a 10-bit color depth. This means that it will be able to produce a palette of 1.07 billion colors as opposed to an 8-bit panel which can display 16.7 million colors. Having a 10-bit panel is also necessary for true HDR 10 implementation.

The Verge reports that OnePlus worked with Samsung to develop the new display. The publication also reports that the company has done work on top of Android to improve animations like core OS gestures.

Additionally, OnePlus aims to have a 0.8 JNCD rating for every 120Hz display it produces. JNCD stands for Just Noticeable Color Differences and is a measurement of the bare minimum color difference a human eye can spot. By comparison, the Galaxy Note 10 Plus has a 0.4 JNCD, which means it displays colors that are near perfect.

Machine translation of the company’s presentation slides suggests that the new display will use a dedicated MEMC chip. MEMC stands for Motion Estimation and Motion Compensation and is usually a technology available on televisions. It inserts new frames between existing ones in a video to decrease motion blur.

OnePlus’ MEMC tech can apparently upscale low frame rate videos to a maximum of 120 frames per second, making the picture smoother and more natural. If this really works as intended, it could mean a much better gaming experience on future OnePlus phones.

Further, OnePlus’ 120Hz display has a touch sample rate of 240Hz and can apparently hit 1,000 nits peak brightness. It is optimized by something OnePlus calls Smooth Chain technology. However, details are scarce at the moment thanks to the official information being available only in Chinese.

Will the OnePlus 8 get a 120Hz display?

Speaking to The Verge, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau confirmed that the company’s next phone would tout the new display tech, even going as far as to say that it will be “the best smartphone display in 2020.”

That’s quite the claim! We just hope the high refresh rate displays are well optimized for power consumption. Current OnePlus devices with a 90Hz display experience significant battery drainage when the refresh rate is set to 90Hz.

This is the Google Pixel 4a: Punch-hole display, headphone jack, and a single camera


Google’s most successful Pixel to date is getting a sequel in 2020, and today we’re getting a first look.

Leaker Steve Hemmerstoffer (known online as OnLeaks) and 91Mobiles just published renders showing the Google Pixel 4a, expected sometime in the next few months.

As with other leaks from Hemmerstoffer, these images are renders built from CAD schematics of the device. Hemmerstoffer has an impressive track record, having published dozens of accurate leaks of high-profile devices over the past few years. That said, there’s always a chance that some details of the renders turn out to be inaccurate, so take them with the usual grain of salt.

So what’s interesting about these first Google Pixel 4a renders?

For one, the Pixel 4a will feature a punch-hole selfie camera in the upper left corner of the screen. That’s a first for Pixel devices – the Pixel 4 and 4 XL feature large top bezels, while the previous generation came with a sizeable notch.

Next, it appears that the Pixel 4a does not feature the Pixel 4’s Soli radar sensors – the top notch seems much narrower than on the Pixel 4, leaving no room for the necessary sensors.

The Pixel 4a features a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, further suggesting that the phone will lack a 3D facial scanner. The loss of Soli should come as no surprise considering the gesture control system is disabled in some countries, including India, due to spectrum utilization restrictions.

Another interesting feature is the headphone jack on the top – like the Pixel 3a before it, the Pixel 4a will retain this increasingly rare functionality.

The Pixel 4a’s design is very similar to the Pixel 4, down to the shape of the camera module. However, the camera houses only one lens, which is pretty surprising, even for a device from Google. You can get amazing pictures with just one camera – the Pixel 3a is living proof – but dual- and triple-camera setups are so common that you’d be hard pressed to find a device with a single camera. Google continues to march to its own drum, for better or worse.

According to 91Mobiles’ report, the Pixel 4a’s screen will be 5.7-inch or 5.8-inch across. Thanks to the smaller bezels, the phone is said to be actually more compact than the Pixel 3a, at 144.2 x 69.5 x 8.2mm.

These are all the details included in the report, but we can make some educated guesses about the Pixel 4a (and 4a XL). Judging from the specifications of the Pixel 3a, the 4a will be a solid, if not impressive performer. The camera will be similar to the Pixel 4’s, offering the same software features including Astrophotography. Hopefully, the battery will be beefier than the 3,000mAh unit found on this year’s model. As for the price, we don’t foresee any major changes – the Pixel 3a and 3a XL cost $ 399 and $ 479 respectively, and their successors are likely to be offered around the same price. Google could release the Pixel 4a a bit earlier than last year, though we can’t rule out another Google I/O launch. In the latter case, the Pixel 4a could be launched in mid-May 2020.

Duet Display for Android lets you turn an old device into a second screen


You simply cannot have too much screen real estate, that’s a fact. Coming to Android today, Duet Display promises to let you turn that old Android tablet you have lying around into a second screen for your PC or Mac.

Duet has been quite successful on iOS, and over the past months the team behind it worked to make the jump to Android. The app lets your devices act as secondary displays for your laptop or desktop. The beauty of it is the broad compatibility – as of today, Duet Display works on Android, iOS, Chrome OS, Mac, and Windows devices. Whatever combination of platforms you favor, there’s a solid chance you’ll be able to run Duet (except Linux, sorry Linux users, I love Linux).

Duet for Android works on phones or tablets running Android 7.1 or higher. That covers most Android tablets released in the past three years. If you have a Chrome OS device that supports Android apps, it can join in the fun as well.

On the other end, the computer needs to run Mac OS 10.14 or later or Windows 10 and the Duet desktop app. You can connect your Android device either using a USB-C cable (microUSB is sadly not supported) or wirelessly.

Once set up, your Android or Chrome device will work just like a regular secondary monitor. The Duet team promises “stellar performance” with zero lag, regardless of the platforms you use. That said, to ensure lag-free functionality you’ll probably want to use the wired connection.

Duet has long been available on iOS only, and it’s good to see this genuinely helpful app make the jump to our platform of choice. Duet Display normally costs $ 19.99, but for the first week of Android availability you’ll be able to get it for 50% off or $ 9.99.

Other Android apps, like iDisplay, have purported to offer the same functionality as Duet. However, a brief look at iDisplay’s recent user reviews suggests the app is suffering from performance and compatibility issues.

HoloFlex is prototype Android smartphone with a flexible display and glasses-free 3D


The world’s first holographic flexible smartphone has arrived. Researchers at the Human Media Lab at Queen’s University have created an Android device that can not only display objects three-dimensionally without the use of glasses or head tracking, but it also takes advantage of bendable screen technology to allow for depth input. The device, called the HoloFlex, is still clearly a prototype, but it’s a strong foreshadowing of the direction mobile tech might take in the future.

“HoloFlex offers a completely new way of interacting with your smartphone,” said Dr. Roel Vertegaal, the director of the Human Media Laboratory. “It allows for glasses-free interactions with 3D video and images in a way that does not encumber the user.” Content displayed on the phone appears three dimensional when viewed from any angle by any number of viewers. The press release explains how this device works thusly:

HoloFlex features a 1920×1080 full high-definition Flexible Organic Light Emitting Diode (FOLED) touchscreen display. Images are rendered into 12-pixel wide circular blocks rendering the full view of the 3D object from a particular viewpoint. These pixel blocks project through a 3D printed flexible microlens array consisting of over 16,000 fisheye lenses. The resulting 160 x 104 resolution image allows users to inspect a 3D object from any angle simply by rotating the phone.

The video showcasing the device’s capabilities includes a demonstration of the Z-axis bend input feature being used to move around parts of a 3D rendered model. Furthermore, a 3D version of Angry Birds shows how the bend capability can be used to pull back the slingshot, with haptic feedback simulating the tension in the slingshot’s strap. When the bird goes flying at the pig in a parabolic arc, the model appears to rise in the Z-axis above the surface of the phone in a parabolic arc.

The HoloFlex will be officially unveiled at ACM CHI 2016 this coming Monday. Here’s hoping that someone snags some VR footage of this clever creation, because 2D video doesn’t quite do it justice. Forget battery life, get Ambient Display notifications on any device – Android customization


Tasker Ambient Display Notification

We’re taking a little break from our Android Wear projects on our Android customization series, we were going to return to root tips, tools and tricks this week, but our project will work on most any phone or tablet. We’d like to take a look at a feature that is found on only a few devices today, and make it work on any Android phone or tablet.

The idea is simple, many new devices with AMOLED displays come equipped with a feature called Ambient Display, simply turning the display on for a few seconds to show you new notifications. This is a handy feature, one that is predominantly reserved for devices with AMOLED displays simply for battery preservation purposes.

Like I said, forget about battery life, we want the feature on our old-school Nexus tablet. For this we turn to our old friend, Tasker, and the plug-in Secure Settings.

Before we begin

You will require a fairly modern device to follow along today, we are having success with Marshmallow and Lollipop devices, but not as much luck on an older KitKat device. Go ahead and install Tasker and Secure Settings, Tasker is $ 2.99 in the Google Play Store and Secure Settings is free with in-app purchases to unlock extra functions.

Ambient Display on your Android phone or tablet

Before we jump in, I just wanted to say again, Ambient Display is made for AMOLED displays because the display tech only turns on the pixels required to display the minimal message, using very little battery to do so. Our project today will need to completely turn on your display, this will eat a great deal of your battery throughout the day, especially if you configure exactly as I will be.

If battery life is not of concern, good, let’s get started.

Open up Tasker and start a new Task, let’s call it “AmbientNotification

Tap the “+” button to add your first action.

Select Plugin.

Select Secure Settings.

Tap the pencil Configuration button.

Expand Actions.

Select Wake Device.

Change the Duration to an amount of time that makes sense for you. Remember your battery life.

Click Save at the top.

Tap the system Back button a couple times, we’re done with the Task, let’s now create the associated Profile.

Head over to the Profiles tab and start a new Profile.

Select Event.

Select UI.

Select Notification.

Tap on the spaceship icon to the right of Owner Application.

Tap the All button in the bottom right, or choose your desired apps to have turn on the display.

Tap the system Back button twice again to save and exit to the next step.

Select your Ambient Notification Task from the list.

Enjoy.

Finally, you’ll need to turn off your display for this to work, obviously. But before it does, please consider the extra security settings that you’ll need to grant to Tasker and Secure Settings.

I might have told you this in the first place, sorry, head into your main system settings, go to Security -> Device administrators and grant Tasker and Secure Settings admin access. When that’s done, head over to the Sound & notification settings to grant Notification access for Tasker. If you follow along after the break, you’ll want to also go into App notifications and make Tasker a Priority.

What’s next

Just for the fun of it I decided to pop up a Tasker notification along with this ambient display project. it serves no point except proof of concept. You could, however, work with our Android Wear project from last week. You can handle yours so that it provides an actionable card on your smartwatch. Like, maybe a button to dismiss this ambient display so it does not eat so much battery.

Now that, hopefully, your creative juices are flowing, remember that we took the fairly obvious notifications as our trigger to turn on the display. You could dive deep and consider many other things to pop on the display, remember that you can use Tasker and Secure Settings to bypass the lock, then display a Tasker Scene to show off any info you’d like.

Here’s a cool project I just thought up, but won’t be building for myself, pair your phone and your tablet (or WiFi camera and tablet) so that with each shot you take the photo pops up for a few seconds on the tablet. This will rely on network traffic and probably a combination of services like Dropbox and IFTTT, but I believe in you.

Samsung explains the Galaxy S7’s Always On Display (AOD)

Let there be LIGHT…in the darkness. But make sure it’s ambient and not draining the battery.

When Samsung launched its Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge last month, it brought forth a fortitude of features. Some were a triumphant return to form such as the inclusion of water resistance (from the Galaxy S5) and microSD card support. Others were entirely new, such as the Always On Display feature. Indeed it is this last in the list that Samsung has taken to talking about today.

In a post on its Samsung Newsroom site, the Korean conglomerate has extolled the virtues of its new screen-off-spectacle in a piece titled, fittingly, “How the Always On Display of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge Keeps You on Track”. The piece begins with a brief overview of the technology, followed by an explanation of its development.

As per Samsung’s comments, the AOD “allows users to check the time and date with ease, and also keep an eye on missed calls and message alerts, even when the phone is not in use and just on standby. And, with its variety of clocks, calendars and themes, the AOD even offers customization options.”

Perhaps the more interesting part, however, is the aforementioned history, where Samsung reveals the AOD functionality began development about three years ago. The problem of course, was in part one of power consumption. To battle such a barrage of battery bleed, several solutions were reached: (1) making liberal use of black colors which AMOLED displays don’t need to light, (2) reducing power consumption in sleep mode to 1/5 of previous models, and (3) applying a new hardware algorithm called Smart Power Saving.

The end result is that the hardware itself consumes power at different rates depending on if the phone is powered on, or in sleep mode. Samsung uses an analogy of how a car driver can opt between 2-wheel or 4-wheel drive depending on the road conditions. Likewise, with respect to the AOD itself:

Power consumption rates vary depending on the information users want to check via the AOD. The display only uses eight colors when it displays simple information, including the time and date. If more images or colors are to be displayed on the screen, then bit depth is increased to 16 million colors, requiring a little more power. This change happens automatically and seamlessly by AOD software and hardware in a harmonious way.

The last part of the piece focuses on yet another way the device makes smart use of energy efficiency: by decreasing the frame rate. The AOD has a lower refresh rate compared to normal operation. This, coupled with the relatively small AOD image itself means that battery power is preserved. Also in play are “special proximity, RGB light and accelerometer sensors work to automatically disable the AOD in situations when users are unable to see the screen, such as when the phone is in a pocket or a bag.” This also lets the AOD itself automatically adjust its brightness.

Revolutionary material could cut smartphone display energy consumption

Smartphone displays are one of the biggest drainers of our precious battery life but a new breakthrough invention being developed by Bodle Technologies could dramatically cut the amount of juice required by future displays in a wide range of gadgets. Rather than an LCD or OLED based displays, this new reflective display makes use of phase changing materials to reproduce vivid colors while consuming very little power.

The idea is based on the technology used in rewritable DVDs and works by using electronic pulses to change the color of the display’s materials. The material itself doesn’t consume any power, only requiring a brief charge to change its state and color, meaning that the energy needed to power a display in a smartphone or wearable could be cut quite substantially.

“You have to charge smartwatches every night, which is slowing adoption. But if you had a smartwatch or smart glass that didn’t need much power, you could recharge it just once a week.” – Dr Peiman Hosseini, founder of Bodle Technologies

Bodle Technologies is said to be in talks with a number of the world’s largest consumer electronics corporations, although none have been named for legal reasons. The company has also secured a “significant” amount of finance from the Oxford Sciences Innovation fund to boost further development.

As well as smartphones and wearables, this innovation is also thought to be useful for the emerging smart glass market, which is estimated to be worth approximately $ 2 billion by the year 2017. Such technology could be used to block infrared waves to help keep buildings cooler without the need for air-conditioning.

We are still quite a way off from the technology hitting any consumer level products, but it’s another promising innovation that could open up an entire new market for gadgets and beyond.

OPPO Mirror 5s officially announced – 5-inch display, Snapdragon 410 CPU, 8MP camera


OPPO Mirror 5s announced

Although early claims stated that the rumored OPPO Mirror 5s wouldn’t be released until the second week in July, it looks like the Chinese smartphone manufacturer has taken the wraps off of its mid-ranger a bit early. Officially unveiled in Taiwan earlier today, the OPPO Mirror 5s features a reflective crystal pattern on its back, as well as a handful of specifications that are actually quite impressive.

The new smartphone has a 5.0-inch 1280×720 display, a 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 410 processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of on-board storage and microSD card expansion up to 128GB. It also has a 2420mAh battery, an 8MP rear camera, a 5MP front camera, a dual SIM card slot and 4G LTE connectivity. What’s more, the smartphone is running ColorOS 2.1, which is based off of Android 5.1 Lollipop.

So far, there’s been no mention of pricing or availability, so we’ll have to wait for official word from the company before we know anything for sure.
