Motorola will offer two Moto Mod teams funding to help launch their products

Motorola has been trying to encourage third-party developers to make unique Moto Mods for its lineup of Moto Z phones. This week, the company had 13 of those development teams present their device ideas to a panel of Motorola, Lenovo Capital, and Verizon executives. The final result was that two of those teams may get funding from Lenovo Capital to help launch their products.

One of the winning Moto Mod proposals was Digiframe, which is supposed to add a second e-paper screen to the back of a Moto Z phone to quickly show information like the weather, a person’s schedule, and more. Users can even stick the Digiframe to a refrigerator with its magnetic back to post notes to other people in the house.

Both of these concepts could receive a share of $ 1 million in investment funding from Lenovo Capital.

The other winning Moto Mod idea was the MACAY TrueSound HiFi accessory, which came out of one of Motorola’s hackathon events in New York City. It will allow Moto Z phones to add higher end audio ports that are usually found in more expensive speakers so owners of those phones can have a much better listening experience on their headphones.

Both of these concepts could receive a share of $ 1 million in investment funding from Lenovo Capital, but that decision is not yet final as the group will still have to perform its due diligence before a final investment proposal is made to those teams.

The teams behind Digiframe and MACAY TrueSound HiFi have also been accepted into the new Moto Mods Accelerator Program. It will provide those teams with hands-on assistance from experienced engineering and design partners that might help them launch their Moto Mod ideas into real products that would eventually be sold by Verizon. Four other Moto Mod design teams have also been enrolled in the program. They include the previously announced Keyboard mod, which will add a physical keyboard to the Moto Z phones, and the Edge mod, which will add multi-LED notification lights around the phone.

The other two concepts that were accepted in the accelerator program are a wireless charging Moto Mod, and one that places a solar energy charging mod on the back of the Moto Z phones. It will be very interesting to see if one or more of these concepts will finally come to life as real products that can be purchased by current Moto Z owners.

Carriers just torpedoed their strongest argument against net neutrality

Federal Communications Commission Proposes New Open Internet Rules TimeDotCom

Several months ago, AT&T threatened the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that they were thinking of withdrawing from the upcoming spectrum auction if the FCC imposed rules that didn’t allow carriers like AT&T to purchase and hoard significant chunks of spectrum. According to AT&T, these restrictions “might” not allow them to purchase enough spectrum to make the investment worthwhile.

As AT&T has warned us on multiple occasions the last few months, the issues of net neutrality and Title II classification were going to “lead companies to stop investing in new network capacity.”

Additionally, Verizon CFO Fran Shammo has made it a point to tell everyone that classifying broadband access under Title II would be “an extreme and risky path that will jeopardize our investment and the development of innovation in broadband Internet and related services.”

So, let’s see how correct both AT&T and Verizon were when it came to the recent spectrum auction:

The FCC’s AWS-3 auction really brought in the cash… After 341 rounds of bidding closed yesterday, the total price tag apparently came to $ 44.899B, nearly four and a half times the reserve price and twice what observers had been expecting. – TelecomRamblings

The auction was the first major sale of spectrum by the FCC in over six years.

  • AT&T spent $ 18.2 billion for 251 licenses
  • Verizon spent $ 10.4 billion for 181 licenses
  • T-Mobile US spent $ 1.8 billion for 151 licenses
  • Sprint didn’t participate

WSJSpectrumAuction

So, essentially, AT&T and Verizon are full of it whenever they complain to the FCC about net neutrality and it’s effect on network investment. In fact, as the Wall Street Journal notes, AT&T paid the most for a single license by spending $ 2.8 billion for one license in New York City.

The bottom line is that there is no reason that these companies will stop investing in network expansions. Net neutrality has proved no deterrent to network investment.

Sony reportedly looking into new ventures, partnerships and sales for their mobile division

SONY Brand Shot logo CES 2014-3

Sony’s mobile division has been suffering over the past few years, and the company may be looking into a new venture to turn their business around. In a recent report, Sony is said to be exploring other options including new business partnerships and even a sale when it comes to the company’s mobile division. The report from Reuters doesn’t name any specific deals or avenues Sony is looking towards, but we do know that the electronics giant is looking for new ventures to save their dying mobile branch. Sony CEO, Kazuo Hirai, explains that “the mobile and TV businesses both require a drastic overhaul.” He goes on to say, “Without drastic reforms such as joint ventures or alliances, they will both be in the red three years from now.”

Sony has been largely focusing on high-end mobile phones and cost cutting over the past few years, and it’s apparent that these attempts to save money aren’t warranting any results. At CES 2015, Hirai elaborated on the company’s status to a group of reporters:

Electronics in general, along with entertainment and finance, will continue to be an important business. But within that there are some operations that will need to be run with caution – and that might be TV or mobile, for example.

All of these alternate business ventures haven’t spawned completely out of the blue, though. In late 2012, Sony moved its headquarters to Japan and vowed to cut 1,000 jobs by the year 2014. The effort didn’t produce many results because Sony later reported a $ 1.7 billion loss due to poor smartphone sales in late 2014. If that didn’t make a big difference, Sony has also recently planned to slim their smartphone line down to hopefully return some sort of profit.

Sony looking into other business opportunities seems to be a last-ditch effort on Hirai’s part to turn the company’s mobile division around. For now, only time will tell what the company will do to increase profits.
