Ported Google Camera with HDR+ gets RAW support and squashes major bugs

The modified version of the Google Camera app caused a few ripples in the Android community because it allowed those who don’t own Pixel or Nexus devices to try out Google‘s excellent HDR+ chops, among other features. Thankfully for fans, independent developer B-S-G did not stop his work on the modified app and released a new version that adds RAW support, squashes some major bugs, and throws in a few features along the way.

With the update, the ported Google Camera HDR+ app can enable RAW capture while saving the JPEG file. RAW support might not be significant for most folks, but it allows others to use their computers for additional processing and fine-tuning as they see fit. It also allows you to use HDR+ and bypass the processing that happens after snapping a picture.

The updated port also allows you to configure the processing modes for HDR+. Keep in mind that you will need to completely close the application and open it for the changes to go into effect. There are also certain combinations that will not work well with each other, so just play around with the settings and see what works.

Finally, overall speed and stability have supposedly been significantly improved with Google Camera HDR+.

Alas, the list of devices confirmed to work with the app is not very extensive, but includes the following:

Other devices, such as the Nokia 6 and Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, should work with the app, since they support the Camera2 API. The list should increase over time, but as of now, it’s a wait-and-see approach.

If you want to give the updated Google Camera HDR+ a spin, head to Android FileHost to download it.

Google Home gets multi-user support in the UK (Update: Canada too?)

Update, June 29: Users in Canada – including our own Brian Reigh – reported getting the multi-user feature on their Google Home units. There’s no official announcement yet, but it doesn’t hurt to check if you have it.

Original post, June 27: Google Home now supports multiple users in the UK. It allows up to six people to connect their accounts, giving them access to their own personal playlists, commute time, schedule and more.

To add multiple users to the device, you first have to have the latest version of the Google Home app installed on your device. Then just open it, find and select the “multi-user is available” card, and tap on “Link your account”.

Once that’s done, you’ll go through a process that will allow the Assistant to understand your voice by saying “Ok Google” and “Hey Google” two times each. These two phrases are then analyzed by a neural network that’s capable of detecting certain characteristics of a person’s voice. What this means is that from then on, every time you talk to Assistant on Google Home it will know that it’s you and not one of the other people who are also using the same device.

Google Home vs Amazon Echo vs Apple HomePod: features comparison

Support for multiple users is available for UK users starting from today. The feature has been available to those in the US for almost three months now, as Google has released it back in April.

The online search giant has to figure out a way to make the Google Home more appealing to users, based on the fact that it hasn’t been selling quite as well as Amazon’s Alexa-powered speakers. According to the research firm eMarketer, Echo and Echo Dot devices are expected to claim a 70.6 percent share of the US market in 2017, while Google Home will only grab 23.8 percent of the market.

Motorola Connect app updated with improved UI, 2015 Moto 360 support and additional watch faces

motorola-logo-mwc-2015-1

Those who use Motorola accessories or smart devices definitely need some help keeping all their gadgets in check. This is why the Motorola Connect app exists; to help users manage their multiple Motorola articles. If you are one of the many who take advantage of this software tool, you may notice there is a new update awaiting in the Google Play Store. You should go get it soon, as it brings forth some meaningful improvements.

The main enhancement is likely the addition of the Moto 360 (2015) to the list of supported devices. The new Android Wear watch joins a list of plenty other supported devices, including the older Moto 360, the Moto Pulse, Moto Surround, Motorola Power Pack Micro, Motorola Keylink and the Motorola Connect PC Extension.

Supporting the new Moto 360 will only benefit a few of you, though. What most users will actually notice is the improved UI, which makes the experience “more intuitive and easier to navigate”. It looks very similar to the new Moto app, which we saw on the newest Moto G and Moto X smartphones.

motorola-connect-screenshots

The new design is sleek and clean. There is a floating action button that allows users to add their devices, and you can simply navigate through your current Moto products and access their settings. By the way, this apps also makes it possible to change the Moto 360 watch faces, and if you jump into the wearable’s options you may find that Motorola also added the new ones from the 2015 Moto 360.

Of course, there’s also the usual batch of bug fixes, but we have no idea what those are all about. Go get your update from the Google Play Store and join the conversation in the comments below. Are you liking the new UI?

Future Samsung devices rumored to support theme customization

samsung galaxy note 4 vs galaxy s5 quick look aa (3 of 7)

Those who bemoan the look of Samsung’s customized Touchwiz interface may have been pleased to hear that the Galaxy A3 and Galaxy A5 were Samsung’s first Android phones to feature theme support, as well as new metallic bodies. There’s even better news for those into cosmetic customization, as sources are suggesting that Samsung is planning to make themes support a priority for all of its future devices.

The stock themes will apparently be similar to those included with the current Galaxy A series, but may also extend to include the changing of system fonts, sounds, and something else called Events. Events seem to allow for sysSamsung Theme Store logotem customization based on specific dates, such as birthdays or national holidays.

To facilitate easy switching of themes, the source suggests that Samsung is also planning to launch a theme store (see logo on the right). What isn’t clear at the moment is whether Samsung will also support third party themes or if customization choices will be locked to a small selection modelled on Samsung’s own tastes.

The anticipated Galaxy S6 could be the first flagship to show off Samsung’s new theme features. Would you like to see Samsung adopt a deeper level of theme support in the future, or could the company better spend its software resources on something else?

Titanium Backup update brings Lollipop support

titanium backup

If you are the proud owner of a rooted Android phone or tablet, then there’s a very good chance that you’ve heard of Titanium Backup. This backup/restore (and that’s putting it lightly) application is so good at what it does, that many people root their devices just to have Titanium support. Luckily for those that have rooted devices running Android L, the latest Titanium Backup update has brought support for Android 5.0.

The update brings Titanium Backup to version 6.2, and contains the following updates:

  • Added initial support for Android 5.0 Lollipop.
  • Fixed “force close” feature not working in some rare cases.
  • Fixed possible FC when syncing back from Google Drive (server-side bug).
  • Updated specific data exclusion for Google Play Newsstand (Magazines).
  • Updated translations.

While only a handful of Android Lollipop devices can be rooted, it’s certainly good to see the Titanium Track team on the ball with keeping their application updated. The Android L powered Nexus 9 tablet recently was added to the “You have been rooted” list, and we expect to see other devices running Lollipop on that list very soon. When that happens, remember that Titanium Backup is already up and ready to go.

For those that have always wondered about Titanium Backup but have never used it, we have a great guide that walks you through using the app here.

The app/update can be downloaded via Google Play.
