T-Mobile officially unveils its “feature-packed” Revvl with a fingerprint sensor and budget price

After several rumors and leaks, some of which came from T-Mobile itself, the magenta-colored carrier officially unveiled its self-branded Revvl smartphone.

T-Mobile touts the Revvl as a “feature-packed phone” that will not break the bank, and it certainly seems that way on paper. The Revvl features a 5 MP selfie camera above the 5.5-inch, HD-resolution display, as well as a fingerprint sensor and 13 MP camera around back. Under the hood, the Revvl sports a quad-core MediaTek MT6738 processor, 2 GB of RAM, a 3,000 mAh battery, and 32 GB of storage that is augmented by the microSD card slot.

T-Mobile One Unlimited: an amazing plan… if you are 55+

If most of this sounds familiar, that is because we originally broke the news just a few days ago. We also reported the Revvl being announced today is only the first in a line of Revvl-branded smartphones that includes two other pricier, more powerful devices. As such, the Revvl is expected to be the cheapest of the bunch.

Speaking of cost, T-Mobile said the Revvl will go on sale tomorrow, August 10 in “participating stores” and through its online store for $ 5 down and $ 5 a month or $ 125 outright. For what the Revvl offers, it is not that shabby of a price, though the Moto E4 Plus, Moto G5 Plus, and others have shown to be solid alternatives.

Interestingly enough, the Revvl was not the carrier’s only announcement – T-Mobile also unveiled Smartpicks, a curated list of affordable smartphones that the carrier thinks is worth your while. Along with the Revvl, this list includes the Samsung Galaxy J3 Prime, LG K20 Plus, LG Aristo, and ZTE ZMAX Pro.

You can pick those phones up on an 18-month lease, or you can do so through Jump! On Demand, which T-Mobile slightly altered to allow folks to pick up any phone on the Smartpicks list. If you think of doing so through the latter, you can pick up any of the aforementioned phones for $ 0 down and either $ 7 or $ 8 a month.

We are not sure why someone would want to switch between budget phones every 30 days, but at least the option is now there.

LG Q6 lineup officially announced with 18:9 FullVision displays

One of the most compelling aspects of the LG G6 is its display. Sporting a unique 18:9 aspect ratio and a resolution of 1440 x 2880, the G6 makes it easy to get the big-screen experience without the unwieldy form factor. The only other smartphones to sport 18:9 displays (well, 18.5:9, technically) are the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus. The problem is, to get one of these high-end screens, you need to buy a high-end device.

Thankfully LG is focused on bringing its wonderful FullVision display tech to lower-end devices, the first three of which are being introduced today. Enter: the LG Q6, LG Q6 Plus (styled Q6+), and LG Q6a.

LG Q6 series specs

As you’ve probably guessed, the standout features on the new Q6 series are their displays. Each one has a 5.5-inch 18:9 FullHD+ display, with a resolution of 2160 x 1080 and a pixel density of 442 ppi. And like the G6, these phones also have curved edges on the screens, which are further accentuated by the subtle curves on the devices’ chassis. All phones in the Q6 lineup sport metallic frames made of 7000 series aluminum, as well.

Surrounding these 18:9 displays are minimal bezels, which, as we mentioned in our LG G6 review, will certainly help with one-handed use.

Under the hood, the entire Q6 lineup features Qualcomm’s mid-range Snapdragon 435 Mobile Platform. The Q6 Plus comes with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage, while the standard Q6 comes with 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage, and the Q6a sports a 2/16 GB setup. They all come with non-removable 3,000 mAh batteries, too.

In terms of optics, all three devices share the same 13 MP standard angle rear-facing sensor, along with a 5 MP 1000-degree wide-angle front camera. The selfie shooters on these devices also come with LG’s Face Recognition feature. That’s a nice touch, too, considering these devices don’t come with fingerprint sensors.

Finally, all three devices are running Android 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box, along with LG’s UX 6.0 on top. Q6 owners can take advantage of features like Square Camera Mode, which debuted on the G6.

XBMC’s Kodi media player officially makes its way to the Play Store with version 15 update

Kodi XBMC

The popular Kodi media center application, formerly known as XBMC, has finally made its way to the Play Store. The app launched in Google Play last month in beta form, but now it’s officially available for all to download. Along with the big Play Store announcement, Kodi is getting a hefty update to version 15 which brings some notable features that make the app even more functional than ever.

For starters, version 15 brings 4K support, refresh rate switching and HEVC playback to capable Android devices, such as the NVIDIA Shield Android TV. It should be noted that Android 5.0 Lollipop is required to take advantage of these new additions.

Read more: 11 best media center apps

Also new to the application is an all-new chapter selector window that lets you visually browse and choose different chapters in supported video formats. Take a look at the video below for a quick demonstration:

Another small, yet notable feature in this update is adaptive seeking functionality, which allows you to skip forward and backward more quickly by tapping the navigation key several times. The developers have made a quick video for this feature as well, so check that out below:

The update also brings new audio and subtitle lists, language add-ons and expanded international preferences, as well as an improved add-on manager. There are a ton of other small improvements listed in the changelog, so feel free to check out the source link for more details. Thankfully the app is now available in the Play Store, so interested folks can get these changes right away.

OPPO Mirror 5s officially announced – 5-inch display, Snapdragon 410 CPU, 8MP camera

OPPO Mirror 5s announced

Although early claims stated that the rumored OPPO Mirror 5s wouldn’t be released until the second week in July, it looks like the Chinese smartphone manufacturer has taken the wraps off of its mid-ranger a bit early. Officially unveiled in Taiwan earlier today, the OPPO Mirror 5s features a reflective crystal pattern on its back, as well as a handful of specifications that are actually quite impressive.

The new smartphone has a 5.0-inch 1280×720 display, a 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 410 processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of on-board storage and microSD card expansion up to 128GB. It also has a 2420mAh battery, an 8MP rear camera, a 5MP front camera, a dual SIM card slot and 4G LTE connectivity. What’s more, the smartphone is running ColorOS 2.1, which is based off of Android 5.1 Lollipop.

So far, there’s been no mention of pricing or availability, so we’ll have to wait for official word from the company before we know anything for sure. We’ll be sure to let you know when we get word from OPPO regarding these details. If you’d like to take a closer look at the handset, be sure to head on over to OPPO’s website.

If the new Mirror 5s ends up making its way to the U.S. for a relatively affordable price point, would you be interested in purchasing one for yourself?
