Motorola will offer two Moto Mod teams funding to help launch their products

Motorola has been trying to encourage third-party developers to make unique Moto Mods for its lineup of Moto Z phones. This week, the company had 13 of those development teams present their device ideas to a panel of Motorola, Lenovo Capital, and Verizon executives. The final result was that two of those teams may get funding from Lenovo Capital to help launch their products.

One of the winning Moto Mod proposals was Digiframe, which is supposed to add a second e-paper screen to the back of a Moto Z phone to quickly show information like the weather, a person’s schedule, and more. Users can even stick the Digiframe to a refrigerator with its magnetic back to post notes to other people in the house.

Both of these concepts could receive a share of $ 1 million in investment funding from Lenovo Capital.

The other winning Moto Mod idea was the MACAY TrueSound HiFi accessory, which came out of one of Motorola’s hackathon events in New York City. It will allow Moto Z phones to add higher end audio ports that are usually found in more expensive speakers so owners of those phones can have a much better listening experience on their headphones.

Both of these concepts could receive a share of $ 1 million in investment funding from Lenovo Capital, but that decision is not yet final as the group will still have to perform its due diligence before a final investment proposal is made to those teams.

The teams behind Digiframe and MACAY TrueSound HiFi have also been accepted into the new Moto Mods Accelerator Program. It will provide those teams with hands-on assistance from experienced engineering and design partners that might help them launch their Moto Mod ideas into real products that would eventually be sold by Verizon. Four other Moto Mod design teams have also been enrolled in the program. They include the previously announced Keyboard mod, which will add a physical keyboard to the Moto Z phones, and the Edge mod, which will add multi-LED notification lights around the phone.

The other two concepts that were accepted in the accelerator program are a wireless charging Moto Mod, and one that places a solar energy charging mod on the back of the Moto Z phones. It will be very interesting to see if one or more of these concepts will finally come to life as real products that can be purchased by current Moto Z owners.

Samsung will finally offer monthly security updates for its US unlocked phones

Samsung is going to finally offer people who own its unlocked smartphones in the US something it promised it would do nearly 18 months ago. It will begin to roll out monthly security updates for those devices “soon”, like the unlocked Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge.

Samsung continues to dominate global NAND flash memory market

You may remember that back in the summer of 2015, Google and its third-party smartphone partners were releasing patches to shut down the Stagefright exploit in Android. At the time, Samsung said it would launch a new program to push out Android security updates once a month so that it would be able to combat these issues faster.

However, while Samsung has released new general and security updates for its Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge devices on carriers like Sprint, AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile, including the big Android 7.0 Nougat upgrade, the unlocked versions of those phones have yet to get those updates. Furthermore, the unlocked phones are currently using the December 2016 security patches for Android.

However, there is some good news on this front. ZDNet reports that, after being contacted by a reader, they have confirmed with Samsung that the company has finally “committed to releasing security updates for those devices on a monthly basis” with the March updates coming “soon”. Samsung said that its unlocked smartphones were previously only getting security updates on a quarterly basis in the US, due to unnamed “various circumstances” but it now said it has “resolved the challenges” that was keeping it from offering monthly updates to those phones.

Hopefully, that means owners of the unlocked Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge will not only be getting Nougat soon, they will also be able to keep their phones updated with regular monthly security patches afterwards. However, Samsung’s response also raised a couple of other questions, chief among them being what “various circumstances” were keeping the company from offering monthly updates to those phones in the first place. It would seem logical to assume the unlocked devices would have been the first to get those updates, rather than the last.

OnePlus 3 exchange offer in India can get you a discount of up to 100%

oneplus 3 gold aa (12 of 22)
Taking a leaf out of the multitude of exchange offers available for Indian smartphone buyers across sales on Amazon India, Flipkart, and other e-commerce platforms, Chinese upstart OnePlus has also jumped on the exchange bandwagon. The company has announced an upgrade program which will allow you to turn in your old smartphone for the newly-launched OnePlus 3 and get a discount of as much as 100%.

With the OnePlus 3, the Chinese smartphone maker has certainly come a long way since the launch of their first smartphone, the OnePlus One, back in 2014. Its powerful features like the massive 6GB RAM, Snapdragon 820 processor, 64GB ROM, and the quick charging ‘Dash Charge’ technology ensure that the OnePlus 3 still gets to give other more expensive flagships a run for their money.

It’s now also much easier to get your hands on the OnePlus 3 because you no longer need an invite, unlike in the case of its predecessors. After being recently launched in India, the OnePlus 3 became available for purchase exclusively on Amazon India where it currently sells for Rs 27,999 (~$ 420).

If paying a midrange price for a flagship device still doesn’t appeal to you, OnePlus is now sweetening the deal by offering an exchange program so that you can swap your old smartphone and upgrade to the new OnePlus 3. Starting today, you can return any old smartphone and get a discount of up to 100% of the value of OnePlus 3. The exact amount of the cashback will depend upon the condition of your old smartphone, which will be evaluated and approved by the company’s program partner, Cashify.

If you want to upgrade to the OnePlus 3 using the exchange offer, you’ll first need to visit Cashify’s webpage to check the replacement value of your old smartphone. Next, you’ll have to purchase the OnePlus 3 from Amazon India and take down the order ID. Finally, you can accept the T&C on Amazon India, after which you’ll be redirected to the Cashify page where you’ll have to input key details of your old smartphone, check your pin code serviceability, and confirm the buyback price and pickup time for your device.

A Cashify representative will then visit you at your submitted address, and pay for your old smartphone after examining the condition of the device. The upgrade offer is available in selected Indian cities of Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon, Pune, Faridabad, Bangalore, Ghaziabad, Hyderabad, Secunderabad, Mumbai, Chennai, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Kolkata, Lucknow, and Ahmedabad.

The exchange offer could be a sign that OnePlus is feeling the heat from other Chinese manufacturers in the Indian market, with budget-conscious Indian consumers warming up to smartphones from OEMs like Xiaomi, Lenovo, OPPO, Vivo, Huawei, Gionee, and LeEco. Even as Chinese smartphone companies slug it out in the Indian market by throwing in more offers and discounts, Indian consumers are obviously happy to get a bigger bang for their buck.

Do you plan to exchange your old smartphone and upgrade to the new OnePlus 3? Let us know in the comments below!

Tap 10 offer gets you rewards for simply using Android Pay

android-pay-main

Android Pay continues to be an exciting feature for those who can take advantage of it, but it seems people aren’t exactly going nuts over using NFC payments just yet. Part of this might be due to the slight hassles one must go through in order to set up Android Pay. If you have been looking for a good excuse to go through the process, though, now is your time.

Google is currently running a “Tap 10” promotion in which users can get incentives (rewards) for simply using Android Pay. The terms are quick to mention that not all users may get the same rewards… if any. Some users might walk out empty-handed, and it all depends on the decision the “sponsor” (Google) makes.

android pay

Regardless, we believe these possible rewards are definitely worth giving Android Pay a try. These include freebies like song downloads and a free Chromecast. All for simply tapping to make purchases with Android Pay. It’s not like you would be spending any extra money here, really.

Read more:

You can get started tapping now, and the promotion will continue until February 29 at 11:59:59 Pacific. There are some limitations, which you can read all about here. The main one is that you have to be within the 50 main US states and the District of Columbia. Also, there is a reason why they call it the “Tap 10” offer. Rewards are given only for the first 10 taps you use Android Pay for. Oh, and you must redeem your rewards by March 31st.

So, there you have it, guys. It’s time to start using Android Pay. I would definitely do it for the chance to get a free Chromecast!

New Xperia E4 may offer a hint at the upcoming Z4’s design

sony-xperia-e4-2015-02-10-01

The Xperia line of smartphones may win the praise of camera enthusiasts and Sony aficionados around the world, but for a variety of reasons, their sales aren’t providing much of a boost to the company’s bottom line. This may be largely due to marketing (or lack thereof) or a design that is overly squared and has seen little change over the past couple of years. Word on the street is that the upcoming Xperia Z4 will feature a new design language and a longer lasting period of pertinence.

We now have the first official images of the Xperia E4 and, while nothing is for sure, if this is a hint of the design language Sony plans to use in this year, things may become interesting indeed. Featuring a curved design that’s more than a little reminiscent of a certain Microsoft married phablet, the E4 won’t be very appealing to spec seekers. The smartphone features a 5-inch qHD (960 x 540) screen, a quad-core 1.3GHz MediaTek CPU, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of on-board storage, a 5 megapixel rear camera, dual-SIM, Android 4.4.4 and a “stamina” battery mode that allows up to 2 days of usage.

Nokia-Lumia-1320-Big-and-Beautiful-jpg

Nokia Lumia 1320 — for better or worse, Sony’s new design language seems a bit… inspired at best. Though change is certainly what the doctor may have ordered!

The Xperia E4 follows in the footsteps of the E3, which was announced in September of last year, and, at least according to its name, is the first generation in Sony’s 4th-gen Xperia family. It remains to be seen whether Sony will keep the 6-month cycle for the Xperia Z4, or more towards a longer lifespan, as rumors suggest.

The Xperia E4 will become later this month in select countries; at least for now, the US is not one of the markets getting it. Also unclear is the price of the device, but what we do know for sure is that the Xperia E4 will face some strong competitors.

While it’s safe to say most people will not give the E4 more than a passing glance at best, the device may be the world’s first window into what the upcoming Z4 will look like. Any thoughts?
