BlackBerry awarded over $814 million back from Qualcomm in royalty overpayments

BlackBerry is going to be getting a lot of money back from its partner Qualcomm soon. The company revealed today that the final results of an arbitration for the two companies will result in BlackBerry getting back over $ 814 million in royalty overpayments from the mobile processor maker.

The two companies agreed to enter arbitration to settle this overpayments dispute in April 2016. At the time, BlackBerry contented that a previous contract made with Qualcomm to cap certain royalties also applied to payments made by the Canadian company, under an older license agreement. The arbitration resulted in a decision in BlackBerry’s favor. The final amount of the award, which will include items like interest and attorneys’ fees,  will be revealed after another hearing on the matter on May 30.

BlackBerry stated in a press release that it was “pleased the arbitration panel ruled in our favor”. In its own press statement, Qualcomm said that while it does not agree with how this arbitration worked out, it admitted that “it is binding and not appealable”. It added that this decision only apples to BlackBerry, and will not affect its license agreements with any other company.

This decision comes just a few months after Qualcomm got sued by Apple in January, claiming Qualcomm overcharged for the use of its patents. Earlier this week, Qualcomm countersued Apple, claiming Apple was “misrepresenting facts and making false statements.”

Pokémon Go hits 100 million installs on Android, made $200 million in its first month

Pokemon Go Pokemon Team

The Pokémon wave continues to wash across the world, with more regional releases in Central and South America, Asia and Oceania in recent days. While the game’s popularity is on the wane in the U.S., it’s worldwide appeal will last for a long time yet. With each new market, Pokémon Go adds a new spike to its download figures and opens up the potential for a lot more paying players. Pokémon Go has now surpassed 100 million installs in Google Play and reportedly made $ 200 million in its first month of release.

Making millions daily

To put some of these figures in perspective, we recently reported that Pokémon Go developer Niantic is making $ 10 million per day on the title. Which is not bad at all considering the game’s slow geographical slow rollout.

Now, app analytics firm Sensor Tower is reporting that Pokémon Go made $ 200 million in its first month of availability. As more and more new markets start playing, that monthly revenue figure may continue to grow significantly.

100 million Android installs in a month

Following its launch on July 6, on July 25, Pokémon Go topped 50 million installs on Android and 75 million on iOS and Android combined. One week later on August 2, across both mobile platforms, Pokémon Go topped 100 million installs.

Then, less than one week later, on August 7, Pokémon Go surpassed 100 million installs on Android alone. (In Google Play, you’ll notice that the game now sits in the 100,000,000-500,000,000 install bracket) The game saw its first 50 million Android installs in 19 days. The next 50 million came in half that time. With even more markets opening up that download rate will only continue to accelerate.

While some very large untapped markets remain, in particular India and Africa, some others – including Russia and China – won’t be getting Pokémon Go for some rather comical reasons. Regardless, the game doesn’t look like slowing down anytime soon and will likely earn a billion dollars for Niantic before the end of the year.

Logitech acquiring Jaybird for $50 million – but why?

Jaybird-1

Many of us can agree Logitech makes great products. Especially their mice and keyboards; these are some of the best in the market. Most people don’t relate the brand to audio very much, but they do own Ultimate Ears (UE), which manufactures awesome audio products. Today Logitech adds yet another audio-focused company to its collection – Jaybird.

Logitech has agreed to acquire Jaybird for $ 50 million, with an extra $ 45 million coming through if growth goals are met in the coming 2 years.

logitech-ue-boom-bluetooth-speaker

Logitech, UE and Jaybird will continue to operate under their own brand names. After all, the Jaybird moniker is not something to take lightly. This company has earned a name for itself, especially for active users and wireless headphone enthusiasts. In fact, the Jaybird X2 Bluetooth earbuds has gotten plenty of awards from Sound Guys, our sister website.

Other Jaybird content:

“We’re impressed by the technology, products and marketing Jaybird has brought to this business. As one team, we can address the fast-growing wireless audio wearables market with all the advantages of Jaybird’s strong brand and sports expertise, and our combined audio engineering and design capabilities. With both the Ultimate Ears and Jaybird brands in our portfolio, we are expanding the long-term growth potential of our music business.” -Bracken Darrell, Logitech president and chief executive officer

The goal here is to combine Jaybird’s marketing and sporting expertise with Logitech’s previous experience in engineering and design. How soon we will see the changes is still unknown, but we will probably start seeing a change in products from both UE and Jaybird, but it seems the acquisition won’t really materialize until fiscal year 2017.

The acquisition is said to close “in the coming weeks”, so this is pretty much a done deal. Let’s wait and see what the future brings.

Sony closes $155 million purchase of Toshiba’s image sensor business

sony logo mwc 2015 3

Sony is the biggest player in the mobile image sensor business and has likely just secured its position. The company has announced that it will purchase Toshiba’s rival  imaging business for 19 billion yen ($ 155 million).

Following a series of rumors, the two companies had originally signalled the closing stages of the deal back in October. Today’s announcement sees the signing of definitive agreements and confirms that Toshiba’s fabrication plant, equipment, and around 1,100 employees mainly located at its Oita Operations facility will be transferred over to Sony, along with the cost of the acquisition. The facility will operate under Sony’s newly formed Semiconductor Corporation, a subsidiary that was formed along with a number of others to give Sony’s various business arms greater autonomy.

Sony is the largest sensor developer in both the smartphone and high-end camera markets. The company’s sensors power a range on flagship smartphone cameras, including the Galaxy S6, LG V10 and the Huawei Mate 8. In the mobile space, Sony has become increasingly dependent on its semiconductor sales in order to offset losses from its struggling handset business. Toshiba had seen more limited success in high-end mobile products, but its T4KA7 sensor was apparently used in the HTC One M9.

The two companies aim to have the asset transfers completed by the financial year ending March 2016.
