The Pixel Launcher is getting a revamped look for some users

When the Google Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones launched in October, they also came with the Pixel Launcher. It did away with the traditional Google search bar, and instead presented owners with a redesigned Google “pill” widget on the left and a weather and date widget on the right. Now, there’s word that a new version of the Pixel Launcher has started appearing on some Pixel phones, and it seems to be going back to its roots.

Problems with the Google Pixel and Pixel XL and how to fix them

The new look of the Pixel Launcher, as first reported by Android Police, ditches the weather and date widget and turns the Google widget into a full search bar again that extends to most of the display. There’s no word as to why Google is making this change, but if we were to speculate, we would guess that many users prefer seeing the simple search bar on top compared to the somewhat more complicated design it originally had.

If you own a Pixel phone and want to get the new Launcher design immediately, you can do so by clearing the data in the app. Be aware this move will wipe out your home screen layouts. Alternatively, you can just wait until Google rolls out this new design automatically. What do you think of this revamped Pixel Launcher? Do you like it or do you prefer the original look. Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge getting Nougat update on AT&T

Update, February 18: AT&T has begun its rollout of the Android 7.0 Nougat update for the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. Weighing in at 1.6 GB, the update delivers all the usual Nougat features you’d expect as well as the February security patch from Google and some Samsung-specific changes. Those include removal of the AT&T Address Book, addition of Samsung Pass and Samsung Cloud and some network performance enhancements. T-Mobile also began its Nougat rollout for the S7 range on February 17.

Welcome to the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Android update tracker page. This page covers all major U.S. carriers with a quick reference table for each and a log with links to further details. It will be regularly updated with the latest Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge update information.

The Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge tend to receive their updates simultaneously – or at least very close together. For this reason, they both appear here on this update page. Also, note that we won’t be covering general security patches in our list.

We recommend you bookmark this page so you can stay up to date with the very latest updates.

Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge Android Nougat update

Following a soak test in early January, on January 12 Samsung officially rolled out Nougat for unlocked international Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge devices that were enrolled in the beta program. A few days later on January 17, the update became available for all users (at least internationally – U.S. unlocked devices have still not been updated). The update then slowly creeped its way across Europe and India before making it to U.S. carriers in mid-February.

On December 20, the fourth Android Nougat beta updates for the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge rolled out OTA to those enrolled in the Galaxy beta program. Technically the fifth update (the other simply patched a crash issue with Facebook), the last beta’s main change was removing the Samsung Notes app and ditching the Samsung Experience interface name in the About Device settings.

Iron Maiden is getting its own RPG, coming to Android this summer

Iron Maiden Legacy of the Beast AA

It looks like one of the most iconic bands of all time is getting its own mobile game. And no, not NSYNC.

Roadhouse Interactive, the folks who brought us Warhammer 40,000: Carnage on mobile, have teamed up to 50cc Games to bring an Iron Maiden game to Android and iOS. The game will be called Legacy of the Beast, and is slated to launch this summer as a free-to-play role-playing game set in the “expansive Iron Maiden universe.”

You’ll play as none other than Eddie, the Iron Maiden mascot. You can explore worlds and travel through time, all while battling a cast of characters drawn from various Iron Maiden albums. Of course, the soundtrack will be comprised of different Iron Maiden songs from the band’s entire discography, including a few unheard live recordings of some Iron Maiden classics adapted for the game by engineer Tony Newton.

According to the game’s official website, here’s what we can expect from Legacy of the Beast:

Battle as Eddie in his many guises across worlds inspired by the rich lore and music of Iron Maiden – one of the most iconic and influential bands of all time. A mysterious force has shattered Eddie’s soul and scattered the shards. Travel through time and space collecting the pieces as you encounter a cast of dramatic and engaging characters. A powerful soundtrack enhances gameplay, using songs spanning Iron Maiden’s entire career, including previously unheard live recordings adapted for the game by engineer Tony Newton under the close scrutiny of Steve Harris.

The game is set to launch sometime in the summer of 2016, but other than that we have no details on the launch date. Are you excited for this new RPG? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

AT&T HTC One M9 getting Android 5.1 Lollipop on July 15th

htc-one-m9-review-aa-6-of-34

The Android 5.1 Lollipop update continues making its way to HTC One M9 devices across the country. The latest version to get the sweet treat was Sprint’s, on July 1st. Fast-forward just a couple weeks and we are finding out the AT&T version of HTC’s flagship handset is also ready to get its relative update.

According to HTC’s Mo Versi, AT&T’s One M9 just received technical approval on the Andorid 5.1 Lollipop software. The OTA update is set to start rolling out starting tomorrow, July 15th.

This AT&T update will be very similar to the one we previously saw coming to the Sprint HTC One M9. It will include camera improvements, as Mo Versi mentions in his Twitter announcement, but users will also see a plethora of other upgrades come with this update. It should also provide better device protection, improved contact-specific notification options, stronger WiFi and more. You can always refer back to our detailed post on the Android 5.1 Lollipop software version to catch all the specifics.

Lollipop statue Android Google straight on

All you have to do now is wait around for the update notification to show up on your smartphones. Of course, you can always check the settings and try to pull the update yourself, but remember these software downloads are usually rolled out periodically. Many of you may not even get it on the 15th, at all, but you should get your notification in due time.

Those lucky enough to get the update should definitely hit the comments section, though. Let us know how the update went and if it’s treating you well!

The one-year old HTC One Mini 2 won’t be getting Lollipop

htc one mini 2 first look (17 of 22)

The One Mini 2 is yet to celebrate its first anniversary (it was officially launched on May 15, 2014), but HTC is eager to make it forgotten, at least when it comes to updates.

In reply to a customer question on Twitter, HTC announced that the One Mini 2 won’t be getting Lollipop, as updating it to the newer Android version would not result in an “optimal experience.”

With 1GB of RAM and a Snapdragon 400 1.2GHz processor, the One Mini 2 is indeed relatively poorly endowed in terms of specs. Then again, Motorola has been doing a solid job issuing Lollipop for the first-gen Moto G, which features the same processing package. HTC’s Sense software is probably harder on the system than the Moto G’s stock-like OS, but we’re still unconvinced that HTC really couldn’t make it work.

The One Mini 2 was HTC’s compact version of the One M8, featuring Android 4.4 KitKat, a 4.5-inch HD display, a quad-core processor, 16GB of expandable storage, a 2,100 mAh, and a 13MP rear camera.

The One M7 is another device that HTC is ready to leave behind, though the company hinted it may reconsider its decision to not update the former flagship to Android 5.1.
