Samsung Display ad shows a phone that resembles Galaxy S8 rumors


The Internet rumors and speculation about the Samsung Galaxy S8 appear to be never ending at this point. However, the latest twist on the company’s rumored smartphone may have come from Samsung itself, or at least from one of its other related divisions.

The source of these latest reports are two YouTube videos posted by Samsung Display, to promote its AMOLED smartphone screens that it provides to other companies, as well as for its own devices. Both of the videos show what appears to be a smartphone with a display that only has small bezels on the top and bottom. It also lacks a physical home button. Both of these features have been rumored for the Galaxy S8.

So did Samsung actually leak out the look of the Galaxy S8 in these clips? Well, most likely the answer is “No”. Both of these videos were shown as examples of the company’s overall smartphone display technology and are probably not directly linked to what the Galaxy smartphone team has in mind for its next flagship device.

Having said that, the videos are likely a clue as to what the display technology will be like inside the Galaxy S8, even if the design shown in the video might not match up to the actual product.

HoloFlex is prototype Android smartphone with a flexible display and glasses-free 3D


The world’s first holographic flexible smartphone has arrived. Researchers at the Human Media Lab at Queen’s University have created an Android device that can not only display objects three-dimensionally without the use of glasses or head tracking, but it also takes advantage of bendable screen technology to allow for depth input. The device, called the HoloFlex, is still clearly a prototype, but it’s a strong foreshadowing of the direction mobile tech might take in the future.

“HoloFlex offers a completely new way of interacting with your smartphone,” said Dr. Roel Vertegaal, the director of the Human Media Laboratory. “It allows for glasses-free interactions with 3D video and images in a way that does not encumber the user.” Content displayed on the phone appears three dimensional when viewed from any angle by any number of viewers. The press release explains how this device works thusly:

HoloFlex features a 1920×1080 full high-definition Flexible Organic Light Emitting Diode (FOLED) touchscreen display. Images are rendered into 12-pixel wide circular blocks rendering the full view of the 3D object from a particular viewpoint. These pixel blocks project through a 3D printed flexible microlens array consisting of over 16,000 fisheye lenses. The resulting 160 x 104 resolution image allows users to inspect a 3D object from any angle simply by rotating the phone.

The video showcasing the device’s capabilities includes a demonstration of the Z-axis bend input feature being used to move around parts of a 3D rendered model. Furthermore, a 3D version of Angry Birds shows how the bend capability can be used to pull back the slingshot, with haptic feedback simulating the tension in the slingshot’s strap. When the bird goes flying at the pig in a parabolic arc, the model appears to rise in the Z-axis above the surface of the phone in a parabolic arc.

The HoloFlex will be officially unveiled at ACM CHI 2016 this coming Monday. Here’s hoping that someone snags some VR footage of this clever creation, because 2D video doesn’t quite do it justice. Forget battery life, get Ambient Display notifications on any device – Android customization


Tasker Ambient Display Notification

We’re taking a little break from our Android Wear projects on our Android customization series, we were going to return to root tips, tools and tricks this week, but our project will work on most any phone or tablet. We’d like to take a look at a feature that is found on only a few devices today, and make it work on any Android phone or tablet.

The idea is simple, many new devices with AMOLED displays come equipped with a feature called Ambient Display, simply turning the display on for a few seconds to show you new notifications. This is a handy feature, one that is predominantly reserved for devices with AMOLED displays simply for battery preservation purposes.

Like I said, forget about battery life, we want the feature on our old-school Nexus tablet. For this we turn to our old friend, Tasker, and the plug-in Secure Settings.

Before we begin

You will require a fairly modern device to follow along today, we are having success with Marshmallow and Lollipop devices, but not as much luck on an older KitKat device. Go ahead and install Tasker and Secure Settings, Tasker is $ 2.99 in the Google Play Store and Secure Settings is free with in-app purchases to unlock extra functions.

Ambient Display on your Android phone or tablet

Before we jump in, I just wanted to say again, Ambient Display is made for AMOLED displays because the display tech only turns on the pixels required to display the minimal message, using very little battery to do so. Our project today will need to completely turn on your display, this will eat a great deal of your battery throughout the day, especially if you configure exactly as I will be.

If battery life is not of concern, good, let’s get started.

Open up Tasker and start a new Task, let’s call it “AmbientNotification

Tap the “+” button to add your first action.

Tasker Ambient Display Notification

Select Plugin.

Select Secure Settings.

Tap the pencil Configuration button.

Expand Actions.

Select Wake Device.

Change the Duration to an amount of time that makes sense for you. Remember your battery life.

Click Save at the top.

Tap the system Back button a couple times, we’re done with the Task, let’s now create the associated Profile.

Head over to the Profiles tab and start a new Profile.

Select Event.

Select UI.

Select Notification.

Tap on the spaceship icon to the right of Owner Application.

Tap the All button in the bottom right, or choose your desired apps to have turn on the display.

Tap the system Back button twice again to save and exit to the next step.

Select your Ambient Notification Task from the list.

Enjoy.

Finally, you’ll need to turn off your display for this to work, obviously. But before it does, please consider the extra security settings that you’ll need to grant to Tasker and Secure Settings.

I might have told you this in the first place, sorry, head into your main system settings, go to Security -> Device administrators and grant Tasker and Secure Settings admin access. When that’s done, head over to the Sound & notification settings to grant Notification access for Tasker. If you follow along after the break, you’ll want to also go into App notifications and make Tasker a Priority.

What’s next

Just for the fun of it I decided to pop up a Tasker notification along with this ambient display project. it serves no point except proof of concept. You could, however, work with our Android Wear project from last week. You can handle yours so that it provides an actionable card on your smartwatch. Like, maybe a button to dismiss this ambient display so it does not eat so much battery.

Now that, hopefully, your creative juices are flowing, remember that we took the fairly obvious notifications as our trigger to turn on the display. You could dive deep and consider many other things to pop on the display, remember that you can use Tasker and Secure Settings to bypass the lock, then display a Tasker Scene to show off any info you’d like.

Here’s a cool project I just thought up, but won’t be building for myself, pair your phone and your tablet (or WiFi camera and tablet) so that with each shot you take the photo pops up for a few seconds on the tablet. This will rely on network traffic and probably a combination of services like Dropbox and IFTTT, but I believe in you.

Samsung explains the Galaxy S7’s Always On Display (AOD)

Let there be LIGHT…in the darkness. But make sure it’s ambient and not draining the battery.

When Samsung launched its Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge last month, it brought forth a fortitude of features. Some were a triumphant return to form such as the inclusion of water resistance (from the Galaxy S5) and microSD card support. Others were entirely new, such as the Always On Display feature. Indeed it is this last in the list that Samsung has taken to talking about today.

In a post on its Samsung Newsroom site, the Korean conglomerate has extolled the virtues of its new screen-off-spectacle in a piece titled, fittingly, “How the Always On Display of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge Keeps You on Track”. The piece begins with a brief overview of the technology, followed by an explanation of its development.

As per Samsung’s comments, the AOD “allows users to check the time and date with ease, and also keep an eye on missed calls and message alerts, even when the phone is not in use and just on standby. And, with its variety of clocks, calendars and themes, the AOD even offers customization options.”

Perhaps the more interesting part, however, is the aforementioned history, where Samsung reveals the AOD functionality began development about three years ago. The problem of course, was in part one of power consumption. To battle such a barrage of battery bleed, several solutions were reached: (1) making liberal use of black colors which AMOLED displays don’t need to light, (2) reducing power consumption in sleep mode to 1/5 of previous models, and (3) applying a new hardware algorithm called Smart Power Saving.

The end result is that the hardware itself consumes power at different rates depending on if the phone is powered on, or in sleep mode. Samsung uses an analogy of how a car driver can opt between 2-wheel or 4-wheel drive depending on the road conditions. Likewise, with respect to the AOD itself:

Power consumption rates vary depending on the information users want to check via the AOD. The display only uses eight colors when it displays simple information, including the time and date. If more images or colors are to be displayed on the screen, then bit depth is increased to 16 million colors, requiring a little more power. This change happens automatically and seamlessly by AOD software and hardware in a harmonious way.

The last part of the piece focuses on yet another way the device makes smart use of energy efficiency: by decreasing the frame rate. The AOD has a lower refresh rate compared to normal operation. This, coupled with the relatively small AOD image itself means that battery power is preserved. Also in play are “special proximity, RGB light and accelerometer sensors work to automatically disable the AOD in situations when users are unable to see the screen, such as when the phone is in a pocket or a bag.” This also lets the AOD itself automatically adjust its brightness.

Revolutionary material could cut smartphone display energy consumption

Smartphone displays are one of the biggest drainers of our precious battery life but a new breakthrough invention being developed by Bodle Technologies could dramatically cut the amount of juice required by future displays in a wide range of gadgets. Rather than an LCD or OLED based displays, this new reflective display makes use of phase changing materials to reproduce vivid colors while consuming very little power.

The idea is based on the technology used in rewritable DVDs and works by using electronic pulses to change the color of the display’s materials. The material itself doesn’t consume any power, only requiring a brief charge to change its state and color, meaning that the energy needed to power a display in a smartphone or wearable could be cut quite substantially.

“You have to charge smartwatches every night, which is slowing adoption. But if you had a smartwatch or smart glass that didn’t need much power, you could recharge it just once a week.” – Dr Peiman Hosseini, founder of Bodle Technologies

Bodle Technologies is said to be in talks with a number of the world’s largest consumer electronics corporations, although none have been named for legal reasons. The company has also secured a “significant” amount of finance from the Oxford Sciences Innovation fund to boost further development.

“This technology is capable of providing vivid colour displays which appear similar to paper, yet with very high resolution. It is also capable of rendering extremely high-resolution videos that can be seen in bright sunlight.” – Dr Hosseini

As well as smartphones and wearables, this innovation is also thought to be useful for the emerging smart glass market, which is estimated to be worth approximately $ 2 billion by the year 2017. Such technology could be used to block infrared waves to help keep buildings cooler without the need for air-conditioning.

We are still quite a way off from the technology hitting any consumer level products, but it’s another promising innovation that could open up an entire new market for gadgets and beyond.

OPPO Mirror 5s officially announced – 5-inch display, Snapdragon 410 CPU, 8MP camera


OPPO Mirror 5s announced

Although early claims stated that the rumored OPPO Mirror 5s wouldn’t be released until the second week in July, it looks like the Chinese smartphone manufacturer has taken the wraps off of its mid-ranger a bit early. Officially unveiled in Taiwan earlier today, the OPPO Mirror 5s features a reflective crystal pattern on its back, as well as a handful of specifications that are actually quite impressive.

The new smartphone has a 5.0-inch 1280×720 display, a 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 410 processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of on-board storage and microSD card expansion up to 128GB. It also has a 2420mAh battery, an 8MP rear camera, a 5MP front camera, a dual SIM card slot and 4G LTE connectivity. What’s more, the smartphone is running ColorOS 2.1, which is based off of Android 5.1 Lollipop.

So far, there’s been no mention of pricing or availability, so we’ll have to wait for official word from the company before we know anything for sure. Sharp in-cell display promises thinner smartphones

Sharp has announced that it has begun mass production of its in-cell type touch displays for smartphones this month. This design technique promises thinner, lighter displays, which could reduce the thickness and weight of upcoming smartphones.

Typically, smartphone displays are constructed from two layers. One layer for the actual light emitting parts, such as the LCD, with a separate touch recognition layer placed on top to detect user inputs. Sharp’s in-cell display technology integrates the two parts into the same layer, with touch sensor circuitry and LCD drive circuitry sitting side by side in the LCD module.

Integrating the two parts into the same layer means that Sharp’s displays will end up being slightly thinner than before, enabling manufacturers to produce smaller devices or use the additional space for extra hardware, such as larger battery capacities.

Sharp has been at the cutting edge of several recent developments in mobile displays. As well as consistently pushing the limits of pixel density with a range of small form factor 4K panel prototypes, the company has also been pushing the use of IGZO backplane technology, resulting in lower power consumption and a wider range of possible free-form design shapes and sizes.

However, the company recently cut 6,000 jobs as part of this year’s restructuring plans, necessitated by Sharps’ third annual net loss in four years and a large bank bailout to keep the company afloat. Sharp’s LCD business accounts for the majority of its sales, thanks to orders from Apple and a number of Chinese manufacturers, so the company has been reluctant to make changes to this part of its business. Sharp seems to be hoping that new technologies will help increase orders from customers.

The first batch of in-cell displays to leave Sharp’s production line are destined for future smartphones. However, the company is also in the process of developing medium-sized in-cell touch displays for use in tablets and notebook PCs, where a little less bulk and weight will no doubt be even more appreciated.
