Pixel 2 XL hits the FCC, LG confirmed as manufacturer

Another piece of the puzzle has fallen into place.

The Pixel 2 XL has just been spotted in the FCC database, in a sign that the official launch of the device is rapidly approaching.

The publication of the Pixel 2 XL FCC documents comes four weeks after the smaller Pixel 2 was identified in the same database. The Pixel 2 docs revealed the phone is being manufactured by HTC, confirming previous rumors for the first time. The filing also mentioned Android 8.0.1 (not Android 8.1) and showed that the Pixel 2 would integrate squeeze gestures, a feature that HTC developed for its own flagship phones.

The new listing confirms that LG is the maker of the larger Pixel 2 XL, but nothing else of note can be gleamed from the document, except the fact that the device will not work on the 600MHz spectrum owned by T-Mobile in the US.

FCC certification is a necessary step for any device that has to operate on US wireless spectrum. While phone makers are not required to certify devices at a specific time before launch, the publication of FCC listings suggests a commercial release is coming sooner, rather than later.

Another leak from today suggests Google might launch the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL on October 4, exactly one year after the launch of the original devices.

HTC 10 confirmed for BoomSound? [UPDATE: video]

Leaked images of the HTC 10

Leaked images of the HTC 10

Update: HTC is back at it with the HTC 10 hype, this time telling showing us a bit more than an image and words. The Taiwanese manufacturer has uploaded a video that hypes the upcoming phone’s BoomSound audio. Let’s check it out.

Original post: So a few years back, the HTC One M7 launched with dual front-facing speakers that nobody had ever put on a smartphone before. They called it “BoomSound,” and users loved the hell out of it. However, recent smartphones created by HTC have kind of left the dual speakers behind, and the terminology “BoomSound” mostly refers to software audio enhancements instead of the twin speakers. So while it’s true the weight behind BoomSound has been diluted somewhat, a new tweet by the company has revealed that the HTC 10 will have it. Whatever it is.

The image that HTC posted seems to indicate that the device will in fact have dual speakers, however. Fans are speculating that the top line of staggered audio elements represents one speaker while the row of five larger, elongated ovals in the bottom represent another set of speakers. Will the HTC 10 crank it to 11? This has yet to be determined, but we can all hope.

The HTC 10 marketing team has been making a lot of claims about their upcoming device. The most wave-making of these is the attestation that the smartphone will have a “World First, World Class” camera on both the front and back of the device. These are high claims to make, especially considering the Samsung Galaxy S7 is already being praised for it’s incredible camera quality. Will HTC’s next device make for worthy competition? We can’t wait to find out.

What are your thoughts regarding the HTC 10? Does the BoomSound feature still hold water for you, or are you more interested in other functionalities? Let us know your take in the comments below!

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge 3600 mAh battery confirmed, thanks to FCC

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus vs Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Quick look-12

While the Galaxy S6 family got a lot of things right for Samsung, there were at least a few small missteps too. First, there was the lack of microSD, and the lack of a removable battery. The GS6 family also removed waterproofing from the mix, and had relatively unimpressive battery life compared to many other phones of the time. With the Galaxy S7, Samsung is set to follow the same design philosophy as it did last year while also addressing some of these shortcomings.

The rumor mill already has suggested that microSD, waterproofing, and bigger batteries are all par for the course with the new Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. Now thanks to a FCC filing for the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, we can confirm that small battery size is one issue that the GS7 family won’t have to contend with.

fcc-galaxy-s7-edge

The rumors already pointed to a 3000 mAh and a 5.1-inch display for the Galaxy S7, with a 3600 mAh battery and 5.5-inch display for the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. Now an FCC label document confirms the 3600 mAh size, though no similar documentation exists for the Galaxy S7 as far as we can tell. That said, it’s probably a safe bet that if the 3600 mAh rumor was right, so is the 3000 mAh claim for the standard Galaxy S7.

The big question now is if a 3600 mAh battery means that the Galaxy S7 Edge will have monster battery life, or if the power demands from its hardware are so great that this is merely a means of keeping up. For what it’s worth, the Nexus 6P has one of the best battery lives out there (the Mate 8 beats it easily, though) in the Android world and manages to get about a day and half battery life for the typical user. Considering the Snapdragon 820 and Exynos 8890 are supposedly optimized to further improve battery life, we’d expect similar, if not better, battery performance here. Of course, it’s really too early to say for sure.

What do you think, excited by the Galaxy S7 Edge? Disappointed by the jump in screen size, or do you think it will prove to be a wise move?

Motorola Droid Turbo 2 and Maxx 2 features and promotions confirmed in leak

motorola droid turbo verizon 10

Verizon is gearing up for an October 27th Droid event, but you can bet we won’t have to wait until then to read all the details. Today we are taking a look at a leak of an official Verizon pamphlet. It tells us quite a bit about the new Droid Turbo 2 and Droid Maxx 2 from Motorola, as well as some promotions Big Red will be holding. Shall we dig right in?

Motorola Droid Maxx 2

The carrier is quick to advertise the stunning 48 hours of battery life the Motorola Droid Maxx 2 is supposed to tout. Though that is a hard promise to keep, the Droid Maxx 2 is said to come with a 3630 mAh battery, which is pretty hefty, in and of itself. Now factor in the that this is to be pretty much another version of the Moto X Play with mid-end specs, such as a Snapdragon 615, 2 GB of RAM and a 5.5-inch 1080p display. This resource-friendly device will definitely last a while!

Not convinced by the killer battery life? Verizon is trying to lure customers by offering some sweet deals. In the case of the Droid Maxx 2, you will be able to get up to $ 300 of credit for trading in your old smartphone.

Want something a bit stronger? The Motorola Droid Turbo 2 is not only said to come with more powerful specs, it will literally be stronger than your average phone. Motorola claims this phone has the “world’s first shatterproof screen”. Now, that promise will be hard to keep! And it’s still unsure what, exactly, Motorola is doing to accomplish this. For now we will just say we won’t believe it until we see it.

Rumored specs include a powerful Snapdragon 810 SoC, a 5.43-inch QHD display, 3 GB of RAM, 32/64 GB of internal storage and a massive 3760 mAh battery. Sounds familiar, right? Yes, it’s pretty much another version of the Moto X Pure (Style).

And while we are on the topic of shattering screens, Verizon is tying this theme into its promotion. In similar fashion, you can turn in any smartphone to get up to $ 300 in credit; even one with a cracked screen! To make the deal even sweeter, Motorola and Verizon are offering one design refresh with the purchase of a 64 GB Droid Turbo 2.

Wrapping up

Pretty sweet stuff, right? Hang tight. The announcement is right around the corner and we will soon know all about this phone due. Meanwhile, hit the comments and let us know which of these two you are going for. Are you liking what you see?
