Deal: Unlocked 16GB Sony Xperia M4 Aqua only $200 from Amazon

Screen Shot 2015-11-04 at 10.53.33 AM

Announced back in March 2014, Sony’s Xperia M4 Aqua was thrown into the competitive mid-range smartphone market with a big price point at $ 350 unlocked. It’s not a particularly bad phone, it’s just never been worth the premium price point the company was asking for it. If you’ve been eyeing this device and have been waiting for the price to come down a bit, now’s your chance. Amazon is currently selling it for the lowest price we’ve ever seen.

Right now, you can purchase the 16GB unlocked Sony Xperia M4 Aqua in Black for just $ 199.99. This is $ 150 off the phone’s price at launch, and roughly $ 100 off what the device is normally sold for. The only real caveat here is that it’s only compatible with GSM networks, so you’ll need to be on AT&T or T-Mobile (or other GSM MVNOs) to use it.

maxresdefault m4 aquaSee also: Best Sony Xperia M4 Aqua Cases

As a refresher, the Xperia M4 Aqua comes with a 5.0-inch 720p IPS LCD display, an octa-core Snapdragon 615 processor, 2GB of RAM and microSD expansion up to 128GB. It also has a really nice 13MP rear camera and 5MP front camera. The 2400mAh battery isn’t the most long-lasting cell we’ve ever used, though we’d say it’s comparable to other devices at this price point. It’s also IP68 certified for dust and water resistance. If you’d like to learn more about the M4 Aqua, be sure to check out our full review.

The Xperia M4 Aqua isn’t worth the money at $ 350, but it certainly is at $ 200. No, it’s not the most powerful mid-range device on the market, but you certainly could do worse for the price. If you’re interested, be sure to head to the Amazon link below to grab one before they’re all gone.

Amazon USA now carrying the unlocked Sony Xperia Z3+

Sony-Xperia-Z41

The Sony Xperia Z3+ (or Z4, as it’s known in Japan) has been the subject of much attention for a few weeks now, as many felt the device to be anything but the handset they were expecting. While the global roll-out formally began last week, customers in the USA looking for the device are limited to the Verizon variant which, admittedly, has more than a few improvements. Those Americans looking for the standard Z3+ can now do so at Amazon, where a few individual sellers are now listing the unlocked device, both Single and Dual SIM variants, for around $ 670.

It should be noted that as orders for this item are not fulfilled by Amazon, the device may (or may not) ship from within the USA, and returns are handled by the seller as opposed to Amazon. Those interested should make sure to read about buying from marketplace sellers as well as ask any relevant questions before purchasing. The model number is listed as E6553, and works with GSM carriers only, so Verizon and Sprint customers will need to look elsewhere.

Sony Xperia Z4v 2

Those seeking to buy a carrier-subsidized Z3+ must seek out the Verizon Sony Xperia Z4v.

The Amazon product description lists the following specifications:

  • 5.2-inch 1080p FHD (1920×1080), IPS display sRGB 130% TRILUMINOS 700cd brightness X-Reality for Mobile
  • Quad-core 1.5 GHz & Quad-core 2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 64-bit CPU; Adreno 430
  • 32 GB Internal Storage, 3 GB RAM, supports microSD up to 128GB
  • Camera (Main): 1/2.3″ 20.7 MP Exmor RS, ISO12800 Photo/ 3200 Video, 4K video capture and output Steadyshot with Intelligent active mode; Front: 5 MP, Exmor R, 22 mm wide angle, Steadyshot with Intelligent active mode
  • Nano-SIM, works with GSM carriers (AT&T, T-Mobile etc.), 4G works in US

The Japanese model has already seen notifications about heat problems with the device due to the inclusion of the Snapdragon 810. Sony itself made a public statement about the issue, and supposedly it has already begun to update the Z3+ to address the potential problem. Still, the Xperia Z3+ is a solid, premium phone with an absolutely fantastic camera and is well-worth considering if you’re in the market for a new device.

Amazon wants you to unlock your phone with your ear – does that even make sense?

amazon-kindle

Keeping smartphones secure has been a key concern since mobile devices became more than just calling and texting machines. These pieces of technology now hold information that could literally ruin our lives if they fall on the wrong hands.

This is why we have all kinds of techniques for keeping our data private. There’s usual patterns, PIN numbers and passwords, but things have been getting a bit more complex. Just as the industry keeps making technology more powerful and convenient, they are also adopting more advanced ways of keeping your private data secure.

These methods include bio-metric techniques like finger-print reading, voice recognition and even eye reading (as we have seen on the ZTE Blade S6). Now we are finding out Amazon is also getting creative and just got granted a patent for ear scanning technology.

calling-girl

The idea is that our ears are just as unique as our fingerprints, so allowing your smartphone to take a picture of this body part (or at least part of it) would help it identify whether it is being handled by its owner or not. The phone could then unlock and allow you to answer your calls.

Does this even make sense?!

So, like all other gimmicks, this sounds like one very cool feature you could really show off at parties. It even seems convenient for a minute, but the hype dies down after you start thinking of possible use case scenarios. Then  you realize it doesn’t even make sense!

We can all agree the best use for this would be to allow users to unlock their phones while answering a call, right? I mean, it’s the only reason why you would ever put your phone anywhere close to your ear.

My main issue is that there is no real reason why you would want to unlock your phone when answering a call. Voice calls are pretty much the only function that bypasses security in all phones… as it should be. You don’t want to have to unlock your phone every single time you answer a call! By the time you unlock your device, the other person may have hung up already.

amazon fire phone press (3)

Now, there is one function that could be useful about this technology. It could identify the distance between the speaker and your ear, allowing the device to adjust volume accordingly. Aside from that, it’s pretty much for people who REALLY don’t want others answering their calls.

Will Amazon do anything with this technology?

Now, the real question: will we ever see this technology coming to the market? Regardless of whether it’s a good idea or not, we are not sure Amazon will ever use this patent. The patent was just passed, but Amazon filed for it back in 2011. The online retailer may very well have slashed whatever plans they had for it by now.

Not to mention, this feature would be for phones. It makes no sense to put it on Amazon tablets (or any tablet, for that matter). The Amazon Fire Phone did horrible, and even though Jeff Bezos swears more iterations are coming, we don’t know how much risk they are willing to take with it.

amazon fire phone commercial

Amazon has been known to be quite adventurous about these bio-metric features, though. The Amazon Fire Phone did have head tracking technology, after all. I am just not sure it’s what they need in order to bring the Fire Phone brand out of its grave.

They need something game-changing and awesome. While it’s cool, ear reading won’t make me buy an Amazon smartphone. But tell us, guys. What do you think? Maybe I am just being cynical and you would actually love something like this.

You can now pre-order the Razer Forge TV from Amazon for $150

Razer Forge

Razer unveiled its Forge TV mini console at CES a few months ago, and it’s finally up for pre-order on Amazon. The Forge TV bundle will ship to customers on May 1st, and will include the Android TV-powered mini console and gaming controller for $ 150. Back at CES, Razer announced that the device would sell for $ 100, but that was just for the console itself.

The Forge TV has a 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor, an Adreno 420 GPU, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of on-board storage, an HDMI output (1.4), Bluetooth 4.1+HS and an ethernet port. Since it’s powered by Android TV, you can run games directly from Google Play. Not only that, you can take advantage of Razer’s new Cortex: Stream service, which allows you to transmit PC games directly to your television. Razer says Cortex: Stream can provide low latency HD resolution when streaming, but early adopters won’t be able to take advantage of the service quite yet. The company says it will be available sometime this Spring.

Considering the box’s beefy specifications and low price point, this may well be the most valuable Android TV box to hit the market so far. Especially with the added benefit of streaming PC games to the TV, we imagine many users will jump onboard with this device. If you’re interested in placing your pre-order, head to the link below.

SEATTLE–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Jan. 22, 2015– (NASDAQ: AMZN)—Amazon today announced that in celebration of two recent Golden Globe wins, it will make all ten episodes of Amazon Original Series Transparent available for free for everyone this Saturday. Transparent, which is typically available exclusively to Amazon Prime members, recently took home the Golden Globe for Best Musical or Comedy Series, while its star, Jeffrey Tambor, earned the coveted award for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy Series. Anyone can watch Transparent at no cost on Saturday using the Amazon Instant Video app for TVs, connected devices and mobile devices, or online atAmazon.com/Transparent. “We’re incredibly proud of everyone involved in the making of Transparent—the team took a risk and it paid off,” said Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon.com. “Big kudos and congrats to Jill, Jeffrey, and all the cast and crew.”

Written, directed and executive produced by Emmy-nominee and 2013 Sundance Best Director winner Jill Soloway, Transparent is a 10-episode, half-hour novelistic series that explores family, identity, sex, and love. The series stars Tambor as Maura, who has spent her life as Mort—the Pfefferman family patriarch. Also starring Judith Light(Dallas), Gaby Hoffmann (Girls), Amy Landecker (Louie) and Jay Duplass (Togetherness), Transparent is the no. 1 ranked series on Prime Instant Video since the show’s launch. Also proving popular among critics, the show clocked in a near-perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes with a 98 percent critic rating, and a 91 Metascore on Metacritic. Due to the overwhelming success of the show, and the incredibly positive viewer response, Amazon has greenlit a second season of Transparent, to air later this year.

In 2013, Amazon introduced a unique process for selecting which shows it turns into Amazon Original Series. Amazon makes pilot episodes available for all customers to watch and provide feedback on, and then uses that feedback to help decide which shows to turn into full series. Through that process, customers helped to get Transparentgreenlit for a full series last year, as the pilot received both critical and customer acclaim. Customers can now weigh in once again on the next pilots they want turned into new Amazon Original Series—13 original comedy, drama, docu-series and kids pilots are currently available at Amazon.com/PIV.

This Saturday, all Amazon customers can enjoy Transparent on their TVs using the Amazon Instant Video app on Amazon Fire TV, Roku, Xbox, PlayStation, Wii, and smart TVs. They can also use the Amazon Instant Video app to watch on mobile devices, including Fire tablets, Fire phone, iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, Android phones, as well as hundreds of other connected devices.
