Deal: Moto X (2014) Pure Edition and Tracks Air headphones bundle is $250 off from Motorola

new moto x first look aa (12 of 21)

If you’ve been on the fence as to whether or not you should buy a Moto X, now may be a good time to decide. Motorola is offering a $ 250 discount when you buy a Moto X (2014) Pure Edition and a pair of TRACKS AIR by SOL REPUBLIC Bluetooth Headphones directly from Motorola’s website before March 10th.

The 16GB Moto X Pure Edition, customized with MotoMaker, is normally $ 499.99, and the TRACKS AIR Bluetooth Headphones are normally $ 199.95 by themselves. So, assuming you’re looking at the 16GB model, you can score both the phone and the headphones for only $ 449.94. Looking at it from a different way, you’re saving $ 50 on a Moto X Pure Edition and receiving a $ 200 pair of headphones for free. Especially if you’re in the market for a new off-contract phone, that’s not a bad deal at all.

Moto X deal

If you’re not so keen on the newly-announced Samsung Galaxy S6, S6 Edge or HTC One M9, the Moto X (2014) will score you a 5.2-inch 1080p AMOLED display, a 2.5GHz Snapdragon 801 processor, 2GB of RAM and a 13MP rear-facing camera. You’ll also get a bevy of handy Motorola software features like Moto Display, Moto Voice, Moto Assist and a handful of others. If you’re interested in taking advantage of this deal, head to the source link below.

If you’re in the market for a new smartphone, are you interested in the Moto X deal? Or are you waiting for the new Samsung or HTC devices to go on sale?

10 best indie Android apps and Android games of 2014

Best indie android apps and games 2014
As many of our regular readers know, we here at Android Authority do an indie app of the day to show off some of the good stuff that smaller developer studios (and individuals) are doing. Many of them are very good attempts but seem to be missing a little something to make them truly great but every now and then something truly special comes across the desk. In this roundup, we’ll take a look at ten of those truly special indie Android apps and games from 2014.

BitLit best Indie Android appsBitLit

[Price: Free with in app purchases]
BitLit the app still has some work that needs to be done but the premise is one of the most promising of any indie app I reviewed this year. BitLit lets you scan your bookshelf (read: physical books) and tries to find you free versions of those books in ebook format or at least tries to find them for you super cheap so you can digitize your book collection. They have a long, steep road ahead of them but the idea is just fantastic and the app is free to try if you’re interested.

buff knight best indie android apps and android gamesBuff Knight

[Price: Free / $ 0.99]
Buff Knight is a fun, albeit short game that mixes the infinite runner-style game play with a few RPG elements. There are two modes of game play and as you play, you unlock new items, collect gold, tap fairies, and kill bad guys. Both the free and paid version contains the core game with the paid version removing advertisements. There is also Google Play Games achievements for those who want that. It’s not a very long game but it was developed by just one guy so it’s forgivable. We hope to see a Buff Knight 2 someday.

brilliant quotes best indie android appsBrilliant Quotes and Quotations

[Price: Free with in app purchases]
It’s hard to believe that we’re talking about a quotes app in 2014 but alas Brilliant Quotes and Quotations did well enough to get a mention here. The app is solidly designed with a calm brown and gray layout and contains 3600 quotes from over 260 visionaries. That’s roughly one quote a day for just under 10 years. It’s free with in app purchases if you’re interested and sometimes we could all use a word of wisdom.

complete ear trainer best indie android apps and gamesComplete Ear Trainer

[Price: Free with in app purchases]
Complete Ear Trainer is a niche application but one that really stood out in terms of its solid design standard and unique blend of app and game. It is a reference app that teaches people how to tune and identify music notes by ear. It utilizes 150 drills over four levels and 28 chapters. However, it also has things like Google Play Games achievements and other backend elements that make it feel more like a game than a learning app. We really liked that hybrid combo and it brings a really special experience to those who use this app.

godville best indie android apps and gamesGodville

[Price: Free with in app purchases]
Godville is a unique text-based game where you play the roll of God and you watch over a warrior. The warrior “tweets” his thoughts and adventures and you read them and react. You can perform miracles, punishments, and try to control the character. He may or may not listen and you may punish or reward him accordingly. There is no game play whatsoever so it may bore some people but it’s still very interesting and surprisingly fun considering that you don’t actually have to do anything.

oops applock best indie android apps and android gamesOops! AppLock

[Price: Free with in app purchases]
Oops! AppLock is a very unique security application. What it does is lock selected applications behind a fake splash screen and the only way to unlock it is to enter the code. The code can be set by the user and uses the volume keys. An example of a code would be volume up, volume up, volume down, volume down. Users can create their own custom images that pop up or leave them as they are to make unsuspecting nosy people think the app froze or crashed. It’s a little rough around the edges but effective.
Get it on Google Play
oops applock best indie android apps and android games

Payback 2 best indie android apps and android gamesPayback 2

[Price: Free with in app purchases]
Payback 2 is a perfect example of what happens when you base your game around the idea of having constant chaos. Players can play online or solo in various game modes such as races and all out deathmatches. Each match takes place in an open world that players can actively explore although it’s not always recommended because usually other players are trying to kill you. There is a variety of weapons and vehicles as well as weekly, daily, and hourly challenges to try to keep things fresh.

potential beta best indie android apps and android gamesPotential beta

[Price: Free]
Potential Beta is an Android app that allows you to sync the Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and battery status across all of your devices. You can also toggle Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on those other devices if you so choose which is a nice touch. This is definitely a fun management app if you have multiple devices, has a decent design, and it’s also free. Recent updates also added Android Wear support, a Chrome extension, and more.

roughanimator best indie android apps and gamesRoughAnimator

[Price: $ 1.99]
RoughAnimator has been a favorite of mine since I reviewed it. It’s a drawing app that lets you draw the various frames in an animation then put them together to create a short animated video. It works best on tablets and large phones (and with a stylus). It has a host of basic animation features and in many cases, the biggest limitation is only your imagination. It’s not a professional grade animation app but it definitely comes closer than pretty much everything else in the Play Store right now.
Get it on Google Play

stuffmerge best indie android apps and gamesStuffMerge Clipboard Composer

[Price: Free]
Last up this year is StuffMerge Clipboard Composer. This new and unique take on the copy/paste mechanism allows you to compose notes and lists using the stuff that you copy around your device. Then you can choose to send or share that note or list to others via the usual sources. It’s definitely a niche app but the frequent copy/paster can find a lot of uses for an app like this. It’s also totally free so it doesn’t hurt to check it out.

Google shares its list of best apps of 2014

Google Best Apps of 2014

With American Thanskgiving under our belts, somewhat literally, many of us have turned thoughts to the next big event. If you were thinking Christmas, this article is for you, but if you were thinking about ‘best of’ lists for 2014, you’re thinking what Google is thinking.

The Google Play Store now has their Best Apps of 2014 page up and running.

Google is not the only ones to share favorite apps lists, as I am sure most of our readers are familiar, every week our apps guy Joe Hindy puts out a segment called Google Play Weekly. Also, I promise, we’ve got our own best of lists for 2014 coming soon.

Google Play Weekly Android apps

Included in Google’s best of 2014 list are some of your favorite apps, many of which are more than expected to make this list, including Link Bubble, IFTTT, SoundHound, Secret and Google Fit.

A few of the apps on the list that were not as expected, include Frontback, Monki, Obscure and Rundavoo. Not to suggest that these apps are not worthy of Google’s best of 2014 list, just that there is a good chance many have never heard of these apps. That said, there are no games on this list, leading us to believe that Google will have more ‘best of’ lists coming.

Be sure to check out Google’s Best Apps of 2014 list, then stay tuned for many more best of lists to come soon.

Are there any surprises for you on Google’s Best Apps of 2014 list?

The best new Android apps and games from October 2014

It’s the end of October and we hope everyone has/had a safe and fun Halloween! We’re getting into November, the weather is getting colder for some (warmer for others) and it’s time to round up the best new Android apps and games from October of 2014!

Camera51 Android appsCamera51

[Price: Free]
First up is Camera51. This unique camera app is for those out there are not the best photographers. It uses a built-in algorithm that helps people take better pictures by suggesting where they hold the camera when they hit the shutter button. It does use quite a bit of CPU because it is making a lot of computations and it’s not recommended if you have an older or a low end device. It is free with no in app purchases and that’s always good news too.
Get it on Google Play

djay 2 android appsdjay 2

[Price: $ 2.99]
djay 2 is already intensely popular on iOS and it’s finally been released on Android as well. It comes with a lot of features and it’s actually quite a bit of fun to use. There is also Spotify support if you use that and it’s $ 2.99 with no in app purchases. Some reviewers have commented that they wish there were more features so it may not be the best tool for professionals but for average people, it’s more than they had before.
Get it on Google Play

Dragon Quest II android appsDragon Quest II

[Price: Free]
Square Enix has been borderline ferocious when it comes to re-releasing their old library on Android. One such example is Dragon Quest II which was released this last month. It’s a jRPG originally released by Enix back before they merged with Squaresoft. It has charming retro graphics and one of the more reasonable price tags for a Square Enix title on Android. If you’re a fan of old school jRPGs then you’ll definitely want to check out Dragon Quest II and possibly even their other Dragon Quest re-releases.
Get it on Google Play
Dragon Quest Android apps

es chromecast plugin android appsES Chromecast Plugin

[Price: Free]
ES Chromecast Plugin is a free plugin in the Google Play Store that grants Chromecast support to the venerable ES File Explorer. It’s a very simple process. You just download and install the plugin through the Google Play Store and you’ll magically have Chromecast support in the regular ES File Explorer app. If you use ES and you have a Chromecast, you should also have this app installed.

inbox by gmail android appsInbox by Gmail

[Price: Free]
It’s true that Inbox by Gmail is still invite only but invites seem to be getting handed out at ever increasing rates so it won’t be long before everyone has one who wants one. Google’s latest take on email is definitely unique and so far has had polarizing reviews. Some think it’s too cluttered and busy while others love the re-design and functionality. It’s too soon to tell if this is going to be awesome or a bust but for right now it’s pretty awesome.
Get it on Google Play

Journey & Notes android appsJourney & Notes

[Price: Free]
Journey & Notes is one of two applications released by Microsoft. This one is a social media application that’s kind of like Foursquare but focuses on the journey instead of the destination. Like if you were going from the store to the post office, you could check in that you’re making that trip with your preferred mode of transportation. Then other people who take that trip can see any tips or comments you made. It’s not all that much yet but it looks like it could be a lot of fun someday and it’s free so it doesn’t hurt to check it out.
Get it on Google Play

Material Wallpapers Android appsMaterial Wallpapers (Android L)

[Price: Free]
Material Wallpapers is a simple little application that gives you Material Design inspired wallpapers and a few official wallpapers from Lollipop and the Nexus 6. It’s free with no in app purchases so the lack of content shouldn’t make anyone mad. There isn’t much else to say about it. If you’re looking for some Material style wallpapers then try this one out.
Get it on Google Play

Next Lock Screen android appsNext Lock Screen

[Price: Free]
The other Microsoft app released this last month is Next Lock Screen. It appears over the stock Android lock screen and it’s kind of like Microsoft’s take on Dashclock widget. It’s fairly functional but there are a few things missing here and there that will probably get fixed and improved in future updates. It is free with no in app purchases so it doesn’t cost anything to check it out. Don’t forget that Microsoft did an Android Wear app this month also called Torque that was pretty fun.
Get it on Google Play

nhl 2k android appsNHL 2K

[Price: $ 7.99 with in app purchases]
NHL 2K was released by 2K Games this last month and it’s probably the most complete hockey game available right now. It’s a little expensive and there are in app purchases but hockey fans really don’t have any other solid options when it comes to a hockey experience on Android. There are several game modes including a couple of fast play arcade modes and a career mode. It also features updated rosters which is always a good thing for a sports game.
Get it on Google Play

NotiWidget Android appsNotiWidget – Notifications

[Price: $ 1.26]
NotiWidget is a fun application that helps you use notifications on virtually any screen on your device. There is a widget that can be placed on any home screen and on the lock screen which mimics Android Lollipop functionality. There is also a Daydream mode so you can check notifications there as well. The developer has been quite active in fixing bugs and making it more solid and so far the general consensus is that this app is pretty awesome and $ 1.26 isn’t a bad price.
Get it on Google Play

Ready Contact List Android appsReady Contact List

[Price: Free with in app purchases]
Ready Contact List is an attempted redesign of the contacts app and dialer app. It features some pleasant visuals, some interesting features, and even themes if you get the pro version through in app purchases. You can even do things like check your email between you and one of your contacts while you wait for them to pick up the phone and you have options to further engage with contacts after you hang up the phone. It’s free to use so there’s no harm in checking it out.
Get it on Google Play

Republique Android appsRépublique

[Price: $ 2.99 with in app purcahses]
République is a new game out this month and it’s probably the best one this list. It features very impressive graphics and game play mechanics as well as a genuinely interesting story line. It uses the Walking Dead-style episodes so you’ll get the first episode when you download the app and you’ll have to buy episodes two and three as in app purchases. So far people seem to really like it and it’s made by the same people who worked on titles like Metal Gear Solid, Halo, and F.E.A.R. It looks very impressive and it’s worth a second look.
Get it on Google Play

talon for twitter android appsTalon for Twitter

[Price: $ 3.99]
Some sad news earlier this month was that Talon for Twitter reached its token limit and that no new people could get it. Some good news is that the developers have released a sequel to Talon for Twitter and it’s called the same thing. This version is for devices running Lollipop only because it has a lot of Material Design and Android 5.0 stuff that isn’t backwards compatible. Once you get Android Lollipop and you start looking for a Twitter client, keep Talon for Twitter in mind because it’s pretty good.
