Best T-Mobile Android phones

T-Mobile Logo

T-Mobile is the carrier everyone else is watching out for. They’re currently the fourth biggest carrier in the United States, though they’re growing very quickly. Thanks to T-Mobile’s “Un-carrier” plan of action, they’ve been changing industry standards for the better over the recent years. On top of all of the changes they’re making, they have one of the widest varieties of smartphones available on any carrier. We’ve already taken a look at the best phones you can buy on Verizon, AT&T and Sprint, and now it’s T-Mobile’s turn.

T-Mobile works a bit differently than the other carriers when it comes to pricing. They’ve gotten rid of carrier subsidies, and basically put all of their phones at full retail price. There are options to pay the device cost monthly, though most of the time, you can still get the devices for $ 0 down. That’s why we’re taking a look at the full retail costs of the phones. The categories we’re looking at today are solely based on price range, split up into three tiers: best phones above $ 500, below $ 500, and below $ 250. Let’s dive right in!

Editors note – we will be updating this list as more devices hit the market.

Best phones above $ 500

#1 – Samsung Galaxy Note 4

Last year’s Note 3 was a beast of a phone, and somehow Samsung managed to make it better. Thanks to it’s 5.7-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED screen, big 3220mAh battery, and 16MP rear-facing camera, the Galaxy Note 4 is meant to draw in just about everyone. It’s running Android 4.4.4 KitKat, and should be updated to Lollipop sometime in the near future.

If you’re thinking about picking one up, however, that comes at a big price. $ 697.99 will get you the phone off-contract, or finance it for $ 31.24 per month for 2 years.

The Note 4 is the best Samsung has to offer, and is one of our favorite phones of 2014.

Specs

  • 5.7-inch Super AMOLED display with 1440 x 2560 resolution
  • 2.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 CPU
  • 3GB of RAM
  • 32GB of on-board storage, microSD expansion up to 128GB
  •  16MP rear cam, 3.7MP front cam
  • Removable 3220 mAh battery
  • 153.5 x 78.6 x 8.5 mm, 176g

#2 – Sony Xperia Z3

Sony hasn’t been particularly aggressive with the US market, but that hasn’t stopped the the company from making their devices available on T-Mobile. For quite some time now, T-Mobile has had Xperia devices available to the public, and this is their newest, best offering.

The Xperia Z3 offers a perfectly-sized 5.2-inch display, a bit 3100mAh battery and is also IP65 & 68 dustproof and waterproof. It has a familiar chassis that we see in almost every Xperia device, though that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The Z3 also brings a Snapdragon 801 processor backed by 3GB of RAM, a 20.7MP rear-facing camera, as well as a number of different storage options, making media consumption a breeze. Sony doesn’t change up their flagship design too often, and they’re definitely taking the “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” approach.

The Xperia Z3 can be purchased off-contract for $ 584.99, or $ 26.25 per month when you finance the device. The price is worth it for this phone, especially if you’ve been waiting to get the best Sony has to offer.

Specs

  • 5.2-inch IPS LCD display with 1080 x 1920 resolution
  • 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 CPU
  • 3GB of RAM
  • 16/32GB of on-board storage, microSD expansion up to 128GB
  • 20.7MP rear cam, 2.2MP front cam
  • Non-removable 3100 mAh battery
  • 146 x 72 x 7.3 mm, 152g
  • Black
  • IP65 dustproof, IP68 waterproof
  • Android 4.4 KitKat (Lollipop update coming down the pipeline)

#3 – LG G3

At the time of it’s release, the G3 had some of the best specs on a smartphone to date. It made headlines as the first phone to boast a Quad HD display, and along with it came a big 3000 mAh battery. The massive (at the time) screen, powerful 2.5GHz processor, and sleek build quality became a force to be reckoned with amongst other flagships.

You can pick up the G3 for $ 598.80 off-contract, or $ 24.95 per month through financing for 2 years. This is still a great option for people who want a great big screen without making too many sacrifices.

Specs

  • 5.5-inch LCD display with 1440 x 2560 resolution
  • 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 CPU
  • 2/3GB of RAM (depending on storage option)
  • 16/32GB of on-board storage, microSD expansion up to 128GB
  • 13MP rear cam, 2.1MP front cam
  • Removable 3000mAh battery
  • 146.3 x 74.6 x 8.9 mm, 149g
  • Metallic Black, Silk White
  • Android 4.4.4 KitKat (Lollipop update coming down the pipeline)

#1 – Samsung Galaxy Note 3

What was arguably the biggest change in design in the Note line, Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3 began getting us really excited about big phones. It’s big battery, super fast Snapdragon 800 processor, and 1080p screen made for a worthy successor to the original Note. Due to constant feedback on their previously used materials, Samsung went with a nice, faux-leather back that really made it feel like a premium notebook.

The Galaxy Note 3 is available off-contract at T-Mobile for $ 416.88, or you can finance the device for two years when you pay $ 17.37 per month. The Note 3 is a really great phone. It was one of our favorite phone of last year, and continues to stay a strong contender in T-Mobile’s lineup. If you’re looking for a (relatively) inexpensive phablet, the Note 3 is for you.

Specs

  • 5.7-inch Super AMOLED display with 1080 x 1920 resolution
  • 2.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 CPU
  • 3GB of RAM
  • 32GB on-board storage, microSD expansion up to 64GB
  • 13MP rear cam, 2MP front cam
  • Removable 3200mAH battery
  • 151.2 x 79.2 x 8.3 mm, 168g
  • Jet Black
  • Android 4.4.4 KitKat (Lollipop update coming down the pipeline)

#2 – Samsung Galaxy S4

While only a minor step up visually from the Galaxy S3, the S4 still brought a more polished look and feel to Samsung’s biggest hit. This time around, Samsung made it a point to refine their software and hardware to make a cohesive package that would appeal to the general public, rather than a niche crowd. Though the software has a lot going on with more features packed in than ever before, we think Samsung will tweak it quite a bit in the upcoming Lollipop update.

If you’re on a budget and looking for a a solid smartphone, the Galaxy S4 is still a great option, despite the fact its not the newest Galaxy S handset on the block. It’s still a very powerful and capable device, and it can be yours off-contract for $ 438, or pay 18.25 per month through financing.

Specs

  • 5-inch Super AMOLED display with 1080 x 1920 resolution
  • 2.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 CPU
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 16/32GB of on-board storage, microSD expansion up to 64GB
  • 13MP rear cam, 2MP front cam
  • Removable 2600 mAh battery
  • 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.9 mm, 130g
  • White Frost, Black Mist
  • Android 4.4.2 KitKat (Lollipop update coming down the pipeline)

#3 – ZTE ZMax

The ZTE ZMax is one of ZTE’s most recent mid-range offerings available in the United States. It features a big 5.7-inch display, a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, and a giant 3400mAh battery. In fact, this is one of the only devices we’ve reviewed that can easily last multiple days on a single charge. It’s thin and relatively light for its size, making it feel like you aren’t carrying around an almost 6-inch device. This isn’t the most high end phone on the market, but for the price, we think you’ll be satisfied with this device’s performance.

You can pick up a ZTE ZMax off-contract on T-Mobile for $ 252, or you can finance it for $ 10.50 per month over two years.

Specs

  • 5.7-inch TFT display with 720 x 1280 resolution
  • 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 CPU
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 16GB of on-board storage, microSD expansion up to 32GB
  • 8MP rear cam, 1.6MP front cam
  • Non-removable 3400mAh battery
  • 162.6 x 83.8 x 8.9 mm, 189.9g
  • Black

#1 – Samsung Galaxy Avant

samsung-galaxy-avant

Just because a device is on the lower end of the spectrum when it comes to specifications, doesn’t mean it needs to run poorly. At least, that’s the case with Samsung’s Galaxy Avant. It features a 4.5-inch display, 1.2GHz quad-core processor, and a removable 2100mAh battery. Most people that want to save some money on a device with a smaller screen are going to like this phone, especially with the added benefit of having a removable battery. The Avant also offers 16GB of on-board storage with microSD card expansion, so you won’t need to worry about media or app storage.

The Samsung Galaxy Avant is available off-contract on T-Mobile for $ 230.40, or $ 9.60 per month when you finance it over two years.

 Specs

  •  4.5-inch display with 540 x 960 resolution
  • 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 CPU
  • 1.5GB of RAM
  • 16GB of on-board storage, microSD expansion up to 64GB
  • 5MP rear cam, VGA front cam
  • Removable 2100mAh battery

#2 – ALCATEL ONETOUCH Fierce 2

ALCATEL ONETOUCH Fierce 2

This next device is meant for people who don’t want to break the bank. The ALCATEL ONETOUCH Fierce 2 offers a nice 5-inch display with a 1.2GHz quad-core processor and a removable 2000mAh battery. Although the device comes with only 4GB of on-board storage, you can utilize the microSD expansion with up to 32GB of extra storage. Like we said, the Fierce 2 isn’t the greatest when it comes to specifications, but you’ll save a ton of money when purchasing this device.

The ALCATEL ONETOUCH Fierce 2 is available off-contract at T-Mobile for only $ 126, or $ 5.25 per month when you finance the device over two years.

Specs

  •  5-inch display with 540 x 960 resolution
  • 1.2GHz Snapdragon 200 CPU
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 4GB of on-board storage, microSD expansion up to 32GB

#3 – LG Optimus L90

lg-optimus-l90-800x420

For those who aren’t looking for the sheer power and performance of LG’s G series, the L90 will do just fine for you. The build quality and design is based off of the LG G3 (minus the rear buttons), though it comes in a much more affordable package. It brings a 4.5-inch LCD display and a decent 2040mAh battery that should have no problems lasting throughout the day. Now, this device is moving towards the lower end of the spectrum in terms of specifications, but that means you’ll get to save some money in the process.

The LG L90 is available at T-Mobile off-contract for $ 168, or $ 7 per month if you finance the device over two years. Honestly, this is a steal for a device that’s based off of one of LG’s best phones.

Specs

  • 4.5-inch LCD display with 480 x 800 resolution
  • 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 MSM8210 CPU
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 4GB of on-board storage, microSD expansion up to 32GB
  • 5MP rear cam, VGA front cam
  • Removable 2040mAh battery
  • 127 x 67 x 9.7 mm, 128g
